timg60 0 Posted December 2, 2005 Looking good, Black is the way forward. If yo are after a Airbox with no holes in it I have one that I could part with. Tim
_leon_ 0 Posted December 2, 2005 thanks mate - no got a 'hole-less' airbox - just i think that with the combination of a k&n and no snorkel is very very loud. its only been this loud since i got rid of the airbox that had holes in it....
Joe M 0 Posted December 2, 2005 ooh, theres a pic of me on the forum now. one thing I noticed now getting an airbox that someone has drilled out holes in - with a n&n and the snorkel removed the noise is deafening. would i std panel filter from VW cure this? And is decent enough to use? What else would be suggested? I reckin you would deffo need an undrilled box, the filter itself doesnt make a huge difference to noise. _leon_ 0 Posted December 2, 2005 damn it i must have been exhausted when i posted last night! i meant that since i have replaced a drilled out box with an undrilled out box, the noise has been immense. Its easy to tell its coming from the airbox - you can locate the 'roar' just by standing in front and yanking on the throttle cable! Its too much for an old cobbler like me ;) and want things a little quieter... yep youre now famous mate :)
coullstar 0 Posted December 2, 2005 Replace the snorkel. There is great big hole in the front of the airbox that the air is being inducted through if its not there. I found the same with mine and that a sensibly drilled airbox with snorkel in place was more subtle.
Neil VR6 0 Posted December 2, 2005 Looks great, similar ride height to mine on the same wheels. :)
_leon_ 0 Posted December 2, 2005 coullstar Yes I should try and find a snorkel then to see if thats helps - at the moment the noice is ridiculous. Neil G60 Thanks mate :) I do like the standards yeah - they look great when the car is all clean. But I would eventually like other wheels - I really like the 16" Keskins that Furki on here and also the 15" Schmidt Modernlines G-Lader used to have on his. I would be also be happy with some RX2's! lol
coullstar 0 Posted December 2, 2005 I think an 8v golf uses the same snorkel.
_leon_ 0 Posted December 2, 2005 good idea mate.
coullstar 0 Posted December 2, 2005 I changed that last post as the car would then have no way of inducting air. Blonde moment.
_leon_ 0 Posted December 2, 2005 i took it that you'd reduce the hole - not cover it 100% ;) what do these snorkels look like anyway? never seen one
coullstar 0 Posted December 2, 2005 Nah, the snorkel actually supresses the noise so it probably wont work. go here - http://www.kf010a4571.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ Airbox drilling is in the downloads section. Picture two shows the snorkel tube.
_leon_ 0 Posted December 2, 2005 ahh thanks for that. Yes I definately don't have that snorkel. Interesting to read about the drilled airbox - tbh I haven't noticed any difference going from the drilled to undrilled. I'll be sorting the cold air feed through the carbon cannister hole this xmas anyway. coullstar help appreciated mate. where in bonnie scotland are you? Furkz 0 Posted December 28, 2005 cant forget the days mine looked like that...so standard
_leon_ 0 Posted December 29, 2005 if i didnt plan to put bigger brakes on it - therefore needing different wheels, then it would stay that way (with the exception of the grill) - i like it looking that way :) but the std bbs' are a pain in the a$$ to keep clean. bring on the comp2s... _leon_ 0 Posted April 19, 2007 and after a good clean... gave it the clay bar, scratch-x and a wax to protect until next go. looks a good bit better... lots of other things being fitted too. though cosmetically, the grill and plates needs to be changed next. _leon_ 0 Posted May 2, 2007 Should be back from Star Performance on Saturday AM - will have the below done: - quieter exhaust! - mocal oil cooler - leda suspension with new top mounts, bearings and stops - geometry sorted - fuelling and timing all set up and dyno'ed - and mot'ed... seriously i can't wait to have it back again... lots to do once it's back again - but not after a full weekend of driving. got a track instructor session at knockhill on tuesday evening - i think its an hour/25 laps. has anyone done this before? just_say_meth 0 Posted May 2, 2007 What cooler did you go for? You should notice a big drop in oil temp. are you keeping the standard oil cooler or ditching it?
_leon_ 0 Posted May 2, 2007 mocal 13row. not 100% sure on the last question - left it in with star - letting them fit and decide. what did you do?
just_say_meth 0 Posted May 2, 2007 Fitted the cooler and took out the standard heat exchanger/cooler. takes a wee while to get up to temp but keeps it about 10-15 degrees cooler when running.Only thing with that is you have to bypass the original cooler with water pipes from a mk1.
_leon_ 0 Posted May 2, 2007 i have those mk1 pipes - so expect that'll be the route taken. not too worried about the extra time to heat up - i'm positive I've read accounts of the heat exchanger failing and mixing water with the oil - clearly not a good thing.
