Henny 0 Posted January 27, 2005 Anyone ever used one of these? I've just bought one and am waiting for my new 80Gb HDD to arrive (tomorrow night) so I can test it out... It all looks good anyway! just wondered if any of you lot have any experience of 'em... 8) Details HERE
dinkus 10 Posted January 27, 2005 That looks sweet 8) I've gone for the Pioneer HU with an aux input for my MP3 player, then I can take my music with me. That's a much cooler (and more expensive?) option tho :)
Henny 0 Posted January 27, 2005 Just got it for £250 and then £70 for an 80Gb HDD... Should be good for about 55days of music before I hear the same track again! 8) Oh, and the cartridge is about the size of an Ipod and will playback its audio if you hook it up to power! 8)
dinkus 10 Posted January 27, 2005 Pretty good deal then! 8) Now where's my credit card...
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 27, 2005 Yeah saw those a couple of years ago when they were about £500-£600 depending on storage size. I have no idea what the sound qaulity is like but it's a cool bit of kit, no question!
Henny 0 Posted January 27, 2005 the specs all look good, and it's got a DSP built into it... oh, and it's got more customisable bits than I've managed to get my head around, and I build and maintain Radio stations for a living! :| 8)
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 27, 2005 So you're responsible for the garbage on Radio 4 then? :D
Henny 0 Posted January 27, 2005 nah mate, I'm only responsible for making sure that my stations (in the north west) stay on air... 8)
RadoAds 0 Posted January 27, 2005 Densions not a brand ive ever heard of to be honest, but looks like a good bit of kit and from the pics looks like its built to a good standard aswell, let us all know what it sounds like Henny wont you!! good luck
Henny 0 Posted January 27, 2005 yeah, they're from Budapest, Hungary! :| BUT, they're sold at Maplins and quite a few reasonable audio suppliers worldwide are now getting them in, so they can't be all that bad... 8) From what I've seen of it so far, the build quality is excellent, just a shame that Maplins forgot to supply the HDD caddy/player with the head unit... Picking that bit up on the way home tonight though along with some appologies! ;) 8)
Henny 0 Posted February 1, 2005 I fitted it last night... Mmmmmm... damn, it's good! 8) The menu system is a doddle to use, the file navigation is as good as your filing/naming scheme is (in my case, pretty damned organised! ) and the sound is great! Sounds better than the CD player that was in the car before (but then, I never have liked Kenwood stereos) Well happy with this! 8)
Henny 0 Posted February 3, 2005 The more I play with this stereo, the more I want to recommend it to other people! 8) It's revolutionised how I listen to music in my car, I've over 4000 tracks on it already! Oh, and it now pops up the following logo on startup and shutdown! 8)

Henny 0 Posted February 4, 2005 I got mine from Maplins, (I get discounts there ;) ) but there's a few places around the country that sells 'em... http://www.dension.com has details of their retailers... ;)
dinkus 10 Posted February 4, 2005 Hang on, did you say qualtiy parts and Maplin in the same sentence?!? Last I saw they saw cheap crap at rediculously high prices... but then I guess if you get a discount it's not so bad. Now you can rock out to Chris Rea all you like 8)
Henny 0 Posted February 4, 2005 with over 8,000 songs (nearly 600 albums!) on mine so far (and not even half full yet!) I can "rock out" to what ever the hell I feel like 8) (and no, there's no chris rear on my head unit... )
dinkus 10 Posted February 4, 2005 Not even Road To Hell?!? Shame that picture doens't say what track is playing :(
Henny 0 Posted February 4, 2005 oh, you may have me there... it may be on one of the air guitar albums...
bcstudent 0 Posted March 17, 2005 Shame that picture doens't say what track is playing :( "Driving Home For Christmas" maybe? From the "Very Best of" album?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 17, 2005 Henny, you're getting old mate.... you're far too young for a Pension, don't you have enough energy to insert CDs anymore?? :D Seriously though, do they have RCA outputs? I quite like the idea of the standalone one in a glovebox with a satellite display. What about sound adjustments? Crossovers? Tone controls? Sub controls? etc etc. Info is sparse on their site. Henny 0 Posted March 17, 2005 two thirds of my CD collection (almost 1200 CDs now... :| ) have been on my PC in high quality MP3 for ages anyway... I wanted something where if someone broke in and nicked it, I just had to buy a new one and not have to try and find some of my rare/signed limited edition CDs or one offs like live sessions I've recorded with work... My unit has 4x line out, (L/R, F&R) 1x din style input socket which can be linked via adaptors to all sorts of other toys (wiring diagram is included so you can simply turn on the menu and wire in a DVD player to get audio from it etc...) 8) It's not got crossovers or sub controls though, but does have loudness and an EQ you can mess about with if you can be arsed to read the manual (I can't! ) I'm not sure how the stand alone one works as it doesn't have an amp in it IIRC, so you have to plug it into your head unit... I got this one 'cos it's a one hit solution... no messing about with lots of wires, cd changers, satellite units etc etc etc... 8) Did all that lot in J-DUB with the TV system... Henny 0 Posted June 22, 2005 UPDATE: Well, I've now found out that Maplins have stopped selling this unit, which is a shame... but seeing as there's rumours that they're about to go bankrupt floating around, it's hardly suprising... :| I've also found out that Dension's after sales support is THE best I've ever come across! Soooo helpful and quick to reply on their website... 8) :notworthy: Oh, and Toshiba 80Gb 2.5" HDDs are crap... (well, the one I had which has just failed was anyway...  ) Glad I have a backup copy of all of my MP3s at home so I won't have to try and re-record 50 to 60 GB of MP3s again! :| 8)
