tandino 0 Posted February 23, 2008 Well ive done two jobs now this week on mine and the Better Halfs car both of them jobs i really didnt want to do but had to! Cracked Exhasut manifold on her Fiat Coupe 20vt which ive been putting off for 18 months and the dreaded timing chains on the VR. 157000 miles on these chains, why they wrent done when the clutch was changed about 30 odd thousand agon ill never know but hey ho! The guide rails top and bottom were in very good shape as was the lower tensioner with only a bit of wear on the lower edge but the top tensioner was shot to bits..... Hi, Have you ever done these before mate and how hard is it to do as mine desperately need doing? Thanks, Darren Nah - never done the chains on a VR before but ive done countless engine swaps, conversions, upgrades, timing chains on other cars etc etc!. You name it ive pretty much done it!. Got fed up years ago of paying serious wedge for some monkey to f**k my car up!. Its a bit of a shit job to be honest, if you can get it done for a decent price labourwise with someone you trust then get them to do it. Its pretty labourious as nigh on everything has to come off bar leaving the block & head suspended from the drivers side engine mount. Also unless youve got either a hoist of a mate to help you with the box forget doing it on your own, i have a hoist but convieniently ive left it at a amtes house from doing an engine conversion on his car. I had my mate with me who owe's me about a years worth of favours and even with towo of us getting the box clear on the way out and again on the way in was a mission. Parts came in at about 100 quid for both chains, both tensioners and both upper and lower guide rails, i upgraded to the later Mk4 upper tensioner and pad. If your going to do it then you will need a weekend to do it - too much to do in a day if you want to do it properly and clean as you go. Good luck! Pete. ProdigalSon 1 Posted February 23, 2008 Took delivery of Danny Allen's shell, and spend the last 7ish hours stripping it for parts, which includes rolling it onto the roof to undo the rear beam! pictures to follow in another thread. I paid for Danny's car, so s t r i c t l y speaking, it's all mine   Picked up a monster petrol-driven metal cutter from a hire shop  and a couple of cans of Plus Gas, then went back to the monkster's to help butcher what was left on that car. Got dibs on the ABS gear and what looks suspiciously like a G60 subframe, on an alleged 16V car...? Sold the utterly dead Cat (it was rattling and loose inside) to a passer by for a tenner  which was exactly one-third of my purchase cost! :D Took a whole load of pics, aided by my better half, sent them to the booster, now waiting for photo postings on his Project Plum thread... Yandards 0 Posted February 24, 2008 /\/\/\/\ Love the way you can see my car through the driver's door, and yours through the passenger's door 8) :D Would be even better if there wasnt a Tesco bag in the back of the shell too ;)

boost monkey 0 Posted February 24, 2008 Picked up the rear bench and 9a alternator from R4-ge (cheers mate), watched my ignition switch splutter on it's last legs on the way home, and then partly cut up the old shell as seen previously. There was just too many sparks going everywhere, and we're right next to the pavement too, so we're gonna get a salvage yard to come collect it this week. boost monkey 0 Posted February 25, 2008 Tried to make sense of all the parts we stripped off the rolling shell:climatronic wiring-Golf from May 01.pdfparts1.JPG[/attachment:28ce8czw] And more views from my bedroom window: 2.8l 24v Climatronic system.pdfparts2.JPG[/attachment:28ce8czw] parts3.JPG[/attachment:28ce8czw] So yeah, quite a lot to get through
coolrado 0 Posted February 25, 2008 fitted my replacement supercharger and the RSR outlet, not looking forward to doing 300miles below 3.5krpm while it runs in. While I was cleaning all the pipework and intercooler out I found a few chunks of chewed up apex strip in the bottom of the intercooler, which is a bit odd as the charger that just failed didn't have any bits of apex strip missing :? boost monkey 0 Posted February 25, 2008 ^^ maybe they're from a previous charger or way back when?
coolrado 0 Posted February 25, 2008 Yeah it would be from one of the previous 3 chargers that failed, but i would have thought the VW dealership would have checked for debris, (Yeah right!) like they didn't change the oil feed line which caused the failures in the first place. stevej 0 Posted March 1, 2008 found where oil leak was originating from (after a while speant cleaning engine with gunk) fitted new HT leads spent a while working out why idle was uneven at tick over & resolved it by fitting spare ISV. took it for a drive.... smiled 8)
benkitcher 0 Posted March 1, 2008 Fitted new header tank, tried to get rid of some rattles (failed :( ) and also found this on the front drivers arch after going to tesco this morning Why do people have to drive like complete retards and crash into my car? Yandards 0 Posted March 1, 2008 Continued my shot blast-athon. Also prepped and primed the new boost pipes for the G60 in matt black so they look a bit more factory.

That sucks mate, but you can get that dent removed for about £50 from a specialist (as long as the paint hasnt cracked)

ProdigalSon 1 Posted March 1, 2008 Last night, gearbox oil change - dead simple, but gearbox hasn't got any better! :( Still almost unusable as I have to literally force it into gear, despite also re-bleeding the clutch slave and master cylinders :? Today, headlining removed and dented silver sunroof replaced with flat black sunroof in prep for the respray :D Tomorrow? Try to sort gearbox before Oxford mini meet, and give her a good wash!
boost monkey 0 Posted March 1, 2008 prepped and primed the new boost pipes for the G60 in matt black so they look a bit more factory. Wouldn't you want to keep them as light a colour as possible so as not to conduct / heatsoak from other parts of the bay? Or were they a horrible colour before? Today I helped bro with his roof ^^

Today I helped bro with his roof ^^ Yes but I am going for the OE look and these bits are for the G60 not the 16vG60 (which is now sat chargerless as I need it for the G60 :() They were powdercoated in a light grey (the BBM boost pipe kit) and look way better in satin black. ProdigalSon 1 Posted March 2, 2008 8am - aligned gearbox cables as per stickied topic :D 9am - re-bled clutch master and slave cylinders :) Took a whole litre of fluid though :? 10am - clutch pedal works, but no engaging or disengaging of gears :( 1pm - put all the tools away and resigned myself to bumming a lift from boost monkey to the Oxford mini meet   My first meet, and no C to take *sigh*
inky 0 Posted March 2, 2008 MOTHER'S DAY TODAY I fixed broken divers door handle....numerous cuts, slashes and hitting pivot pin wiht hammer to get out!! Now fixing the broken spoiler (thanks to hubby), and replacing the whole mech and motor what a fun filled day :D
CazzaVR 0 Posted March 2, 2008 Andy, new clutch time? :( Think I need to align my gears too, as 1st, 2nd and reverse are occasionally sticky :? Took off all the intake/rocker breather/ISV pipework today + BMC CDA, to inspect for airleaks, as the car still vibrates and drops revs sometimes in 1st gear, and has given me the following fault '00533- idle air control reg adapt range below minimal level'. Gave everything a good clean and refitted with another ISV setup + standard airbox/K&N panel filter while I give the BMC a good clean and re-oil. Took it for a quick spin- how quiet?! Car felt a lot smoother with no probs... Will leave the standard kit on for a few days to see how it goes. I'm sure I'll start missing the roar though...
