Cold Cathode kits

Recommended Posts

I've got Andis white dials on my clocks and i'm in the process of redoing the blue leds behind them again. I've just seen these Cold Cathode kits which look pretty simple and seem to give out lots of light - anyone had any expereince with them and what would be the suggestions? I've had a little "chat" on another thread about something similar but that was off-topic hence this new thread. What I'm looking to do is to bung these behind the clocks instead of having a line of leds on a some circuit board.

Oh BTW, there's a link here worth looking at:

Mods - sorry, how do you shorten links?

I bought some of these in blue and in red for work - they are cheap and cheerful, but they aren't too flimsy and they do the job!

The blues were brighter than the reds, but not sure how the purples will look... 8)

Yeah, not purple, thatwas my mistake, went back to the wrong item. gradeAfailure, can you use them behind the dash do you think or would they be too thick? And can you post some pics up of what they look like lights on. Cheers.

I'll try and get a pic over the weekend...

The cathodes are probably a bit big to fit behind the dash (I was gonna use mine to light the footwells - too tacky?) but have just discovered that the light units come apart, and the cathode element itself is 110mm long and only 5mm in diameter, so it might well fit...

I say just buy 'em anyway - they're not exactly gonna break the bank!

Nah not at all, a lot of modern cars have footwell lighting and my Dad's Mondeo even has lights in the wing mirrors to light the floor up!

My bad - have just been playing around with them and have noticed that the cathode elements have a wire running down the side of them which will be at a rather high voltage  so I don't think you'll be able to fit them behind the dash as they're a bit too bulky otherwise...

Sorry!

Kev, cheers for that, reckon I might get some to light my footwells! Green to match the illumination, or red to match the car?
