Might pop into MG Rover on my way to work tomorrow and see if there's any cars for a fiver yet... ;)

Been discussing this today with people who work for Peugeot, Toyota, VAG, Nissan/Renault and Ford - general view was "what can MG Rover give us that bwe don't already have" when you remember that the 75, 25 and K series are already in the hands of SAIC its obvious that they have sod all to offer any other manufacturer apart from the creative thinking of some talented engineers. As a company I fear MG Rover is a dead duck, just feel desperately sorry for the workers / families who are going to be affected by this

Anyway, I'm sure the metals will never be robust enough to even use as a skip!

All I know is they would have to be knocking out there cars ridiculously cheap for me to even consider one. Maybe they could try and sell them to 3rd world countries like Renault are trying because no one out there knows or cares how crap they are!

just look at how well the Nissan plant in sunderland is doing! IIRC its the best performing car plant in europe???

 

Dad works there, its also the most heavily subsidised. british labour costs cant compete with overseas, they have a rumour of closure every other week!

 

I also remember primary school milk, some **** always got the only chocolate one from our classes crate before me :(

I did consider an MG ZT V8 but even with the 40% discount I was offered I was nervous about the future of the company. What has killed sales is not that the cars are old fashioned. its more to do with a lack of customer confidence - theres going to be some bargain new cars around for the brave in the next few months

 

I dunno.. they were a bit old fashioned. I think Clarkson thumping around in one of those ZT V8's whilst smoking a pipe on Top Gear said it all ;) :D

It's almost as sexy as the urban roader 25 or whatever it is. It's a normal 25 with bits of plastic bolted on. Woo. Top Gear ripped the heck out of it when it came out, yet it would appear that there is one idiot in my town that has recently aquired one. :roll:

 

Oh and James Dyson is another example of a British inventor that went abroad (Japan) to get his invention made...

I feel sorry for the workers, but I've been driving a Rover 111 (Metro) while delivering Pizza and it's nasty. Really nasty. It's an M reg, has more rust than my 'rado and drinks more petrol as well.

Rover were just beginning to pull it together and given a year they might have been building quality cars. The £40 million got pulled out of the company by the directors for their bonuses and pensions probably didn't help either...

Maybe it is now, but when the revised Metro range came out in 1990 I think they were fairly well received. My parents bought a 2 year old 1.4GTa in '92 and that was very reliable and a decent enough drive. Cars have moved on so much since then - it's Rover's lack of investment in new models that's been the problem.

 

Sums up why MG Rover are in their current position - we'd rather be driving 8 - 14 year old cars than anything that they produce

 

But clearly this applies to other manufacturers too - most other manufactures don't produce anything particularly desirable or the other models are more than you want/can afford to pay.

 

I for one will be sad to see Rover go, perhaps not the greatest cars but certainly not the worst either. I hope that at least MG survives and can become a profitable smaller volume manfacturer.

This is a fascinating thread for many reasons, just so far from the general forum themes!

I agree with a lot of points but not all, interesting reading!

 

The Princess was an aspirational car of the time by all accounts, i was too young to know the difference at the time but later on i recognised something really special with the Austin Princess.

20 years ago when I and most of the teenagers and early 20yr olds either had or aspired to have a Ford Escort and you could watch the rallying on TV every week and Top Gear was a can't miss programme making it's mark, we discovered that our MKII Escorts could have 4pot callipers and vented discs up front!

A tenner from the scrappy and an impressive break upgrade for your Escort 20years ago!

It's a lot different now with a 4pot kit costing £500 upwards, as someone said a couple of pages ago 'the good old days!'

Just takes me back.
