Misfire/hesitant acceleration etc etc!

Recommended Posts

Similar prob to Rob in the other thread, but a few differences, so started a new one :)

The car is really lumpy to on start up. Fires up immediately, but needs revving, otherwise feels like it's going to stall.

When driving, if you decelerate it's often very jerky.

When you floor it there is no response for a few secs. It's much better if you accelerate slowly.

Finally, when you come to a standstill, it revs away on it's own a few times, then eventually settles down to normal idle.

Had it checked out was told it needed new leads and a lamda sensor. Changed the leads and it's no better, and have it booked in next week at a VW specialist for the sensor.

Any ideas? It's had a recent service and the fuel filter was changed. Could it be the sensor?

Any help would be much appreciated as it's driving me mad!

Thanks!

Check the distributor cap and rotor arm, mine was mashed from the inside and i though it was the ISV making the car jerk. the problem seemed to get worse in rainy weather.

Thanks Jim, where is the coilpack?

Think the ISV is worth checking too- where is it?

Think they're the bits at the back right of the engine behind the leads, but want to be sure! :? Is the ISV below the coilpack?

Thanks!

You might not have a coilpack. What year and month is your car?

Andy, the coil pack is easy to find follow the HT leads to the point at which they all converge at the gearbox end of the cyl head. The isv is located under the inlet manifold to the right of the throttle body. this you will possibly find a little difficult to inspect without removing said manifold.

I seem to have some similar problems to andyg60.

Mines an early 93 vr, and seems to hesitate on acceleration, until around 3500 rpm.

Also the idle is steady, but a tad lumpy. certainly not v6 smooth anyway! The C's had a major service only 1k ago, and new plugs/leads.

I was thinking it maybe a blocked/f*** injector, even though it's has a few pints of wynnes injector cleaner though it.

Any help would be great

just a few things off the top of my head

distributor cap/rotor arm........as yours is a 93K-plate it should have a distributor

what fuel you using?.........if 95ron U/L try super U/L or optimax......and has the fuel filter been changed recently?

lambda probe/sensor giving up the ghost

are you using the correct spark plugs?..........NGK's are seemingly the only ones that can cope with the heat the vr6 engine generates

Checked all hoses and coil and everything's in good nick. It's booked in Monday for lamda sensor, so hopefully that will nail it. I'll let y'all know.

andy get the ics unit checked out, its connected to the thottlebody

they go after a while as well as the mass air flow meter, i had this posted on another thead....

ic unit cost less than the mass air flow meter surprised me.. as all it is, is a strip of thin wire that air passes over!! When changing the ics unit the memory has to be reset on the car.

let as know cheers !

Thanks for that VR6Storm,

Got the right ngks in, and using super or optimax.

The cars a 93 L, with no dizzy.

Whats the cost of a lamda sensor, and what access like to cx it?

Well, got the lamda sensor done, and there is a good improvement. However, it's still revving on it's own for a few seconds when I stop, and is still slightly jerky when I decelerate. Checked all the hoses for splits etc, but they are all pukka. Think I'll have the ISV out for a clean when I get time. Any ideas?

Think I've found the problem! There is a tube on the left hand side towards the back of the engine near the air filter. It's right next to the longest spark plug lead. It has a small disc shape (about 8cm across) halfway along, then becomes corrigated and curves down where it joins the main air pipe near the throttle body.

It's completely split off in front of the disc part.

Can anyone tell me what it is/give me a part number?

Cheers

Where does the other end of the pipe go? If its the one that goes to the carbon canister you could just block it.

Joe, it comes out from the left side of the engine. Where is the carbon canister? Thought it was at the back to the right of the throttle body. As you can see, I'm still a complete novice with the VR!

Cheers

The pipe from the carbon canister comes out of just under the throttle body somewhere, it goes to the left of the engine bay and has a sort of disk shaped valve that I think was attached to the suspension turret. The hose then dissapeers under the airbox where it goes into the carbon canister underneath the airbox at the front of the bay.

If its this hose then look for the thread vr6 carbon canister location, I think its in the tuning section.

Cheers Joe for the description, and Andi for the cracking picture! :D

The bit that's broken is the pipe next to the HT lead with the metal clip. It's split off where it meets the disc shaped valve thingy. Anyone got a part number?

Thanks!

can you get a pic of it andy ? sounds like the oil breather pipe i think, if possible try and show a diagram if possible that would help....

Did they check your ICS unit and mass air flow meter like i said ? also did any faults codes come up on the vag-com test ?

VR Zen, went to VW last night and apparently it's the solenoid valve for the carbon canister......£78!!!! :?

Ordered one, so I'll fit it on Friday. Hopefully that will be all the problems sorted!

Cheers for your help guys! :D
