VR6 Radiator Blown...

I was enjoying my drive home from work in my 1994 VR6 when on came the coolant warning light. Turns out the radiator has popped and is basically dead (it's done almost 140k so i'm not too surprised).

I need to get this repaired ASAP - where's the best place to go? Will I have to go to the stealers, or will my local garage or performance specialist be able to order one in fairly quickly and fit it cheaper?

I don't know if this is a VR6 only part or is it common to other VW's?

Advice would be very much appreciated.

You could try your stealers as well as I don't know what the quality of GSF's radiators is like not having used 'em.

I've had a GSF rad in my Golf VR6 for the last 3 years & it's been fine. ISTR the stealers wanted £170 + VAT; GSF was £82 + VAT

Keep in mind that its not exactly an easy fit- a 'reasonable' mechanic can do it no problem- but I remember my very competent VW specialist had to do some thinking before he could replace it without having to take off some of the front of the car.

 

I read about a VW specialist in sheff no too long back on this forum But can't remember the name :oops: - There is also JBS autodesigns in chesterfield if you live on that side!

I believe ECP do the genuine article for around £110, from memory...

 

I saw a new ECP one on a VR last week - looks ok but its not genuine.

No its not genuine, Its AKG, who are an OE supplier. The originals were valeo and Marston.

I fitted a ecp one to mine a few months back and it seems fine £110 and a bit awkward to fit but I would'nt like to pay the labour charge at a garage to have it done.

The radiator really is knackered - not worth having it repaired. It does need replacing ASAP so I don't have the time to fit one myself. I've booked it in with Swifts performance car specialists in sheffield. They're gonna give me a quote tomorrow. I'll let you know the outcome...

Quick question - the coolant is flooding out of the system pretty quickly. Will I be ok to top it up and drive it a couple of miles down the road, as long as the oil temp stays reasonable (under 110)? I don't want to do unneccesary damage to the engine.

I'm going to try this later on as the plastic joint at the top of my VR's radiator has broken. I've got about 3 miles to go so I'm just going to take it easy and keep an eye on the oil temperature, and stop if need be.

 

Does the thermostat feed the top or bottom of the rad? If it's the bottom I'm thinking the cooling system will hold the water until the thermostat opens as it should bypass the rad. It that right?
