dinkus 10 Posted August 17, 2005 So the brakes are finally on and I've written a Wiki article on what you need, so this thread is just discussion now - anything new or useful will be added to the Wiki article :) http://www.the-corrado.net/wiki/index.php/312mm_brakes
jedi-knight83 0 Posted August 17, 2005 you are correct that 288 and 312 both use the same calliper.. just different carriers s3 and tt are exactly the same i know that much.. interestingly.. TT v6 and r32 callipers are the same size but have 2 pistons instead of 1 so that could be yet another upgrade
dinkus 10 Posted August 17, 2005 2 pistons you say?!! Mauahahahahahahaaaa
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 17, 2005 Dinks....they're all the same MK4 Golf platform and all the 312 discs are identical. The 288s differ between MK3 and MK4 though because of the disc offsets.....and this is where you run into problems also when fitting 312s to the MK3 Hubs (Corrado). Asim had the 312s done and he DID need washers. It's because the 312 disc is a deeper offset than the MK3 disc, so the carriers sit further in too....the washers are need to space the carrier out relative to the hub so that the caliper sits centrally over the disc. Either way mate, buy the TT setup from Audi which is £180 through Neil (£88 per disc? dunno what he's on!) and if you need washers, so be it, a few pence, if you don't you don't..... you're stressing over nowt
dinkus 10 Posted August 17, 2005 I don't wanna buy new carriers, they're just hunks of cast iron, so I'm buggered if I'm paying £90 for the pair. and I hope £88 is a pair, not each  (still presumably +VAT tho :? )
jedi-knight83 0 Posted August 17, 2005 dinkus, audi part number for the 312 discs and price from VAG parts 8N0 615 301A £42.73 + VAT EACH kevhaywire, did you need spacers for your setup? the callipers i sold you were mk4 ones IIRC.. or doesnt it matter as you were still using MK3 discs?? dinkus 10 Posted August 17, 2005 Ah cool, chars Nathan.
jedi-knight83 0 Posted August 17, 2005 no prob pads if you need 1J0 698 151M £40.92 + VAT tell you what.. i'll do you a special price ... £14k for all my 312mm breake set up and you get a free S3 with it :D
dinkus 10 Posted August 17, 2005 Ah dang, see I've already bought the pads, so I'll have to pass on your most generous offer I'm afraid
24V Renshaw 0 Posted August 17, 2005 Dinkus, First off you don't need special hoses, you can use original MK4 hoses no problem. - 312mm Discs - 4 x 6mm Washers for an M12 bolt - 4 slightly longer (can't remember the dimension) Fine pitch M12 bolts - Calliper carriers suitable for 312mm discs. Thats it. Jay
dinkus 10 Posted August 17, 2005 Score, thanks Jay :)
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 17, 2005 jedi-knight83, I used Golf Highline 288 discs mate  And yeah, the highline, MK4, TT, Leon etc calipers are all the same ATE jobbies.... I think this is the most convenient and cheapest brake upgrade I've ever seen. 312s for 16s and 17s, and 288s for 15s (fit behind speedos and solitudes), it's an hour's work to swap the carriers and discs over..... fantastic 8) The 312s go behind BBS OK, not sure about your rims though Stinkus, we'll have to look at that. And I'd rather pay £90 for a pair of new carriers than get some skanky used ones that might have been in a front ender and fractured. It's your brakes man!!! dinkus 10 Posted August 17, 2005 Hmmm, just called a breakers in Old Basford near Nottingham and the guy had some S3 brakes sitting there and said they were only 288... Measured an Octavia vRS and they're deffo 312, but they didn't have any carriers... So does that mean TTs have 288s as well?
jedi-knight83 0 Posted August 17, 2005 i think the 150bhp tt's might have had the smaller ones but i think 180 and 225 both had the 312s S3 is definately 312!!! he was wrong if he said
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 17, 2005 Aye, 288s never appeared on the S3! Dinks, buy the new ones mate...you know it makes sense. Scrappy will prob want £40 + carriage.....
dinkus 10 Posted August 17, 2005 Heh heh, he got a tape measure out and measured them... Could have been smaller size brakes on the lesser powered ones tho. I just called another breaker and they only wanted to sell the brake setup complete - £250 for a 4-Motion setup. Methinks not. Just called another place and they wanted £90 just for the carriers!! I told him I could get them new for that, so he's said he'll call his stealer and check and call me back
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 17, 2005 Dinks....I'm ringing Neil in a minute....Now...do you want me to get 2 sets of carriers and 312s, or just the one for me?
dinkus 10 Posted August 17, 2005 Well I need to make sure I can get the disks and callipers behind your gay wheels first  Don't want to be putting any more spacers on there...
bcstudent 0 Posted August 17, 2005 i think the 150bhp tt's might have had the smaller ones but i think 180 and 225 both had the 312s Audi made a TT with 150bhp?! If that's true it's something new I've learned.
dinkus 10 Posted August 17, 2005 I think he means an S3 with 150bhp...
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 17, 2005 Yeah, there was a 150bhp TT and it was FWD and single tailpiped too  The poor man's TT..... not that there are 1000s of the blasted things on the s/hand market !
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 17, 2005 Dinks, the S3 has only ever been 210 and 225 bhp mate....
dinkus 10 Posted August 17, 2005 I'm starting to think that I might have to settle for some 288s for now. £160 +VAT is £211 for brakes, whereas at the moment, all I need are 288 disks which will be about £80. Can't really justify the extra £100 with not having any guaranteed employment at the moment - especially as there's not gonna be that much of an improvement over the 288s. I could just leave the 288s on for now and stick some R32 brakes on at a later date... I could even have your old disks off you Kev :D Edit: I stand corrected about a crappy TT!
Supercharged 2 Posted August 17, 2005 yep - was gonna say take kevs old ones...
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 17, 2005 Feck off, I need them for when I swap between 17s and 15s! You need to feel the difference between 288s and 312s to appreciate it mate, there's a BIG difference.
