Car failed MOT (MAF meter cleaning???)

Recommended Posts

Okay, here goes.

I took it in for an MOT on last Friday and it failed on the Emissions test. So i took it back in on Monday (First day of new job in London aswell) for a diagnostic test, and they've told me that the Road speed sender - G68 (00281) wasn't sending a signal so it needs a new one of them and the Air mass/flow meter - G70/G19 (00520) was shorting out AND the adjustment limit mixture regulation (00587) was in effective and they've given me a price to replace the first 2 which came to the best part of £700  (£700 which i don't have considering the resent move to London) , So i've now considered selling   the C, which is next to impossible without a current MOT for which i need to shell out £700 or well......................and that's where i'm stuck i just don't know what to do. Please, Plesae, Please someone help, i'm in pain just thinking about it.........

Thanks

get the MOT done in a welsh village. mine passed without a CAT lol

Seriously though, I'm sure someone on here has the offending parts for less than VAG and I wouldnt be surprised if an exceptional saving could be made through GSF or GPC.

Stay calm and start ringing around a few garages for labour prices

brand new VAG MAF's are the best part of £350, so that'll account for a large chunk of the cost, although I hear bosch do an exchange program where they take your old on and give you a reconditioned one for £150... sorry i dont know any more info than that on it! You could change the MAF yourself, its a real doddle, £200 saved.

A MAF sensor and an engine speed sensor costing £700?! Who's having who on!

Seriously.. speak to a VW specialist for a quote on those prices.. shouldn't come to anywhere NEAR that!

Road speed sensor??? there's an electonic unit on top of the gearbox that sends a signal to the speedo - about a fiver from a scrappy I'd have thought, probably same on passats.

A mass/flow meter - I guess you mean the fuel distributor and air flow plate/cone unit on a 16v, I would have thought you could have picked one of these up second hand for under 50 quid, I'm sure I've seen them reconditioned and sold with a warranty for less than 200.

If they are quoting you for new parts then that is quite feasible, I know an m.o.t place around Orpington are pretty lenient when it comes to m.o.t time if you like!

You won't get much for it without the m.o.t, someone will just use that as amunition to haggle you down.

You can get fault codes on a 16v - but RW1 has said that vag com only works at the lower baud rate settings

All late 16v's came with self diagnosis like the VR.

MAF's are usually located between the airbox and the throttle body, you could try cleaning it but it's probably over 10 years old, i'd say get a new one...

Aye, only 4,800 baud rate setting works for this engine ECU part no. 8A0 907 404L or 8A0 907 404CC and VAG-COM must be preset to use this baud rate in "Options" first...... plus the interface must be electrically not optically isolated.
