squirrel 0 Posted September 9, 2005 Can anyone help, I own a '95 16v corrado, the heater matrix has just packed in, I think? I was driving along and the windscreen misted up and i could smell anti freeze, I checked the carpet but that was dry? Does anybody know about the work involved to repair it and how much for the parts? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Henny 0 Posted September 9, 2005 I can help you here 'cos mine's just gone too... The reason you haven't got damp carpets yet is 'cos the heater bypass safety valves have cut in and are re-routing the coolant from the matrix back into the engine... they let just enough through to steam up the windscreen when it initially goes without throwing scalding hot water all over the driver and passengers feet (which is jolly nice don't you think? ). When the pressure in the coolant system drops, the valves will open again and I'll bet if you check under the carpet it's wet, and give it a couple of days and the carpet itself will be wet too... Parts: Goto GSF and the matrix is about £40. How-to: Good question, it's not in the knowledge base yet, but I know someone's posted up a pretty good how to based on the VW guidelines on how to do it... I'll be writing one including any shortcuts I find as I go along as I do mine, but that won't be for a week or so yet (and probably a few more before Dinkus posts it up   ) It DOES involve removing the complete dashboard though, so it's not a 10 minute job... :( However: before you write off your matrix, check that the expansion tank isn't steaming... the cabin fan's fresh air feed is right next to the expansion tank, so if the car was overheating it's possible that it just pulled in the steam coming from the expansion tank and blew that up the screen giving you the smell of antifreeze... KARMANN 0 Posted September 12, 2005 I done mine a few months ago-was dreading doing it-but if you follow the how to (think it was on the canadian website) its an easy enough job.Beacuse of the amount od screws etc your removing its easy enough to forget what ones are used where. So for each section of dash i put screws etc in little bags with the parts they hold on. CorradoVR6-Turbo 0 Posted September 14, 2005 just for a small matrix you end up having to rip out dash....jeezzz!!
daves16v 1 Posted September 14, 2005 That's just crazy! I thought I read somewhere you can do it without removing the dash but it's very awkward? I'd rather go down the awkward route than remove that lot. Anyone?
CorradoVR6-Turbo 0 Posted September 14, 2005 you have to pull out dash then unbolt heater box from inside the engine bay as heater matrix faces the bulkhead.....crap i know but its not a bad job !
