I was called "a bl**dy boy racer" yesterday in the

Recommended Posts

alright peeps

i was in a petrol station yesterday and some old fart called me a bloody boy racer (im 30 !) because he got in the wrong lane and i wouldnt let him butt in front of me in my quicker moving lane (he went on to put 7 quid in his rover 45 whilst i put 48 quid in my rado but thats another story)

but anyways it got me to thinking IMO the Corrado has never been or never will be a boy racer car due to it being expensive when new and expensive now to maintain, but its funny how also IMO that the traditional boy racer cars of the late 80's and early 90's are no longer driven by boy racers, think RS Turbo, Astra GTE / GSI, Renault 5 Turbo's, 205 GTI's etc most of them id say nowadays are driven by 30 plus people who can appreciate the merits of the cars and its funny how the status of these cars has changed from boy racer mobiles to modern classics, or perhaps its just me, i dont feel embarassed in my £1500 H reg rado when im parked up against say the likes of a new beemer and it would be the same if i had a mint RST or GTE. I would much rather spend 5 grand on a rado or a GSI than some poxy late plate saxo

ramble over

(by the way ive never taken my rado over 3500 revs so i definately cant be called a boy racer!!)

Boy Racerism comes from how the car is driven..... if everyone drove Corrados like they were stolen, then they'd earn the same reputation as XR3is did. But thankfully Cs attract a more discerning buyer.

Never taken it over 3500rpm? That's like going out with Kate Beckinsale and only knobbing her once a week....

To be honest some of these old duffers who drive blandbox 5 door saloons consider ANYTHING that is brightly coloured or sporty looking 'boy racerish' - I wouldn't worry too much personally ;)

You're right though mate-no need to feel inferior to beemers, mercs, repmobiles etc.Your car is something special, not ten-a-penny like every jelly mould car on the road today.I find it amusing that people spend 20-30k on a car that you wouldn't look twice at.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that, but i'd still rather have a set of wheels with soul.

What do you think happens if I turn up at the petrol station in my Mk1 Rocco then?

I simply don't care, it make me feel superior over all these normal folks with their dustbins :-)

i think the condition of the car helps the image too, most boy racer types don't look after their cars compared to someone who likes the car for it's merits and maintains a nice car be it a nova, escort or bmw. but most people around me think i'm a boy racer because my car makes a bit more noise than a new car and my age, but stuff 'em i'm just enjoying my hobby :)

i think its just people using the term incorrectly, to me a boy racer is a young lad in ANY car who drives too fast and has little or no road manners, not someone who enjoys cars, owns a 'sporty' model and keeps it well.

I've owned just about all of the great 80's hatches and I ain't a boy racer! it's just that people assume you are because of the car you have. So it is defo the person not the car. Ahh, my 205, great days, LOL.

I got stuck behind a rover 25 the other day, bad mistake, it was an sdi aswell!!!

A Rover 25 is the least likely car to be stopped by cops so I read the other day, probably as they always look like they are stopped.

Do they still call em boys racers?

As for Kate, I wouldnt kick her out of bed if she farted unlike our Valver ;-)

If someone calls my a boy racer, i simply reply 'yeah, what's your point?'

No one has ever been able to reply to that.

Besides, why should we care what a bunch of old coffin-dodgers think?!
