a good place for your tweeters?

I was looking in my C the other day for a good spot to fit my adhjustable Rockford tweeters.....

 

I came to the conclusion that fitting them where the electric window adjuster is so the face intowards the centre as I believe this is the blace place to project sound.

 

I know some people that put the tweeters in teh top corners right next to your ears and talking to a ICE specialist he said that its a bad place.

 

All speakers he said to give the best sound needs to be directed into the centre.

 

What do you think of my idea?

 

All that would have to be done is move the switch for the elecy windows else where. Perhaps to the right of the coin holder by the gear stick??

 

If anyone has any pics that would be great or if anyone has done this mod I would be gratefull to have a look.

Tweeters should be at ear level ideally but not always possible in a car. just look at any floor standing house speaker the tweeters are always at the top to thats for a reason. Also a cars acoustics are totally different and the tweeter may refect the sound round the car to much especially when places high near glass.

 

Speakers in a car are hard to direct physically. In my C i have set the sound so that the "hotseat" the optimal audio spot is the drivers seat. After all, i spend most of the time in my C alone to and from work, so why shouldn't i have the best stereo image.

 

The sound should be coming from all around you rather than front or back, left or right, just bear that im mind.

 

I've got mine in the door pods facing up into the passenger compartment.

you can mount your tweeter under the grills in the dash.(where the OEM tweeters are) that would be the best place for them if you dont want them in the door pods.

G60Jet, Mmmm, do you think they would look smart in the door cards where the switches are for teh elecy mirrors. I think they could fit in nicely and my Rockies do have some slight movement on the tweeter to angle them where you want.

The best position for ur tweeters is as far away from ur ears as possible. This is to get the soundstage as far forward as possible. The 2 best locations are:

 

1) In the corners of the dash, where the windscreen meets the top of the dash. I have mine here but they require some attenuation from the crossovers as they can be quite bright.

 

2) In the kickwells angled upwards, somewhere between where the headrests.

G60Jet, Surely the vibration from the door speakers would distort the tweeter. Like people how run 6 x 9 in the rear shelf and have 2 12" subs, the rears just distrot the sound. They recon that 1 or 2 subs or what ever in the rear and components up front amped is the best set up?? I personally like a bit of lyrics hear directly in the rear but there must be a reason for it. Maybe the power and polarity from the front is sufficent and the base from the rear subs it a good set up>

okay the tweeters i have a sealed units and therefore are not effected by the door speakers.

 

The tweater should like i said ideally be at ear level, but in a car this is not practicle, so you basically want the sound to come from one location.

 

I.e the high and mid in this case to come from the same spot so the sound reaches your ears at the same time. thats why mine are there.

 

the only exception to this rule is bass and sub bass as it is rarly directional and the wave length is so long, it dont matter.

 

Now 6*9's and subs should not be put in the same enclosure as you say they will distort each other. (basically the subs will pump the components) A sub driver or series of subs work best in an enclosure. when you mount speakers on the rear shelf you are making the boot the speaker enclosure. Thats why i would fit 7*10s next time on my parcel shelf. then a enclosed bass unit in the boot that does not have a port ideally.

 

In the front of my C is have tweeters and mids running through a 2 way crossover powered of an amp, in the rear i have two component 6*9 which i dont really like, they are also running off an amp.

 

The gain on the amp is set up so that the sound level in the car is about correct and all the speakers reach their peak handling at about the same volume, the sound comes all round you rather than rear or to the front. the balance is slightly left so i can get a better stereo image in the drivers seat as i said before.

G60Jet, Fair enough but IMO 7 x 10 would look a bit silly on the parcel shelf.

 

Maybe not, I would have to see it first. In all my other cars I had 6 x 9's and with my C its got nothing on the rear shelf and I like the tidy look but I dont quite get the sound im looking for. Plus you dont show that you have speakers on the shelf and people may be less tempted to smash the window and rip your ICE out.

 

Yeah, you can carpet them over with acoustic carpet but it never looks factory and not as tidy.

 

If I did the mod I could always put small boxes and carpet those around the magnet of the 6 9's to try and stop the distortion.

 

My friend makes sub boxes for a well know stereo company in Bournemouth and he said that he would do my boot for free as long as I bought the materials which is fair enough so im looking at ideas and suggestions.

 

Now I have grown up a bit I kinda like having th eboot space, Its nice to be able to take your jacket off and put it in my boot as I hate jackets and crap lying around the car.

No one can see my speakers in the parcel shelf and given the volume of the boot in the corrado the 7*10 are better suited imho. my rear shelf is reinforce to cope with the wight of the speakers and to shop the shelf moving btw.

 

you should not enclose most 6*9 as they are ment to be mounted into a space like the boot and putting a box round them will basically kill the sound. just fill you boot full of stuff and see how the sound changes.

 

If you run a bass speaker in a sealed box then you are NOT going to get the other speakers distorting unless you are over driving them.

I have mine mounted up in the top speaker pods on the dash. i have focal speakers and the tweeters have little stands so i made wooden bases and siliconed the bottom to the heater pipes. Sounds awasome and is angled at exaclly where they should be and is stelthed!! Can post some pictures if needed.

That's where I have mine at the mo. I'm thinking of replacing them with 4" 2 way mids and putting 6" midbass in the doors.

I'm not a fan of 6x9's. Don't like the sound stage behind me. I've got some 4x6's in the rear quarters for rear fill. In case I get a passenger.

I like the idea of that. I was originally going to try this to get the soundstage as high as possible but was told by alot of people not to bother. So i bought the Focals. Then i read about an install in a demo car fitted up by Infinfity and what did they do? 4" 2-way in the dash with a 6" woofer in the door... For exactly the same reason as was going to.

 

In the end, i'm quite happy with what i've done, as i was quite impressed with the soundstage the standard set-up gave so i was just trying to enhance it. The Facals have adjustable crossovers and my head unit has a seven band graphic equaliser and i spent about two weeks (not solid :lol:) setting everything up. At the time i regretted it, but now i'm really happy. I close my eyes and can't tell where the sound is coming from. Job done. They really need amped though cause they're struggling with my type of music at the volume i play them it at!! :lol: Its loud, just not loud enough!!!!! :twisted: :lol:

I've got one of the new Alpine headunits. I can adjust the time correction croosover and the parametric EQ online. Should make the basics alot easier. Then I'll have to fine tune them by ear of course. I've got MB Quart component set at the mo, I'll try them and see what happens before I buy anything else. Got the matching amps as well for front and sub to sort as well.

I did this on my mk2, put the tweeter in an angled holder where the window winder would of been, sounds great.

 

Experiment first though with blu tack 8)

I found the best place for the tweeters was at the top of the A-Post, had 4" mid-ranges in the dash-pods and mid-bass drivers in the door pods. Worked wonderfully.... then I sold the car
