Well if you've got all of the right parts that you know are going to fit first time without any faffing about, it certainly makes it easier...

i've also got a vid of a street race between a VR and a SRT-4....gonna try and dig it up.....VR has all the Shcrick stuff while the SRT-4 is a stage 3 setup....but I don't think you guys will like the outcome

Feck, I'm proper jealous now, I wish I had even HALF the mechanical knowledge and ability of that guy, he looks quite young too... damn I feel so stupid right about now :(

to tell u honestly...once you've done something once it becomes 10x easier after that....i worked on my first VW a month ago...MK2 G60, swapped the suspension out....did the VR over the weekend and it was a piece of cake..aside from the odd bolt stripping...

if you really want to learn how to do this sort of thing its just a case of getting the right tools, getting your hands dirty and giving it a go.

as long as you take your time and double check things there is not a lot that can go wrong, and its a lot more satisfying than just handing over a wedge of cash IMO.

me and my mates have been messing about with cars and bikes since we where in school and even swapped an engine and brakes from a y10 turbo into a y10 touring in an evening which was back on the road the next day.

love the bit where he's fitting the second cam and drops a nut into the head... Fecking always happens

They've got everything they need for building a good engine there: Good lighting, plenty of room and a clean working environment... that's all you need really... the video probably has the 3000 trips to the haynes manual to find out which way up something fits or what torque to tighten something to deleted to make it fit into 10 mins though!

Engines are basically just a large meccano set... follow the instructions, take your time and it'll end up like it's supposed to... rush it and think you're too clever and bits will fall off and it won't work.... ;)

There's one thing that has surprised me reading this thread!!!!!

Ant that's the comments about how great it would be to have that knowledge about engines etc!!

I'm a little startled, and possibly a touch disappointed to boot.

I enjoyed watching the vid, and no stranger to building engines myself, i was watching to see some key points as to what he would do.

To my surprise, he did a really good job and inserted the rings then straightened them with a piston corwn and measured the gap just where the most wear would occur then adjusted the gap with a rin grinder, verry impressed he took as much care to do it right as he should have, though nothing he did there was difficult or out of the ordinary, in fact he could have done more but for the vid it was a sterling job!

So when some people on here shout up and say that some users are purely into the chromed bits and have no mechanical ability, it seems it's true and as i said, i'm surprised but that's fine and i'm not having a dig here so don't take it the wrong way anyone, that includes Dr Mat!

TBH, I learned a huge amount from watching Scruffythefirst build his engine up from scratch and there's still a lot I don't know.

However, unless you have any need to (or indeed the time and space to) then it's unlikely that the average car owner will have taken their own engine apart.

Admittedly, it isn't actually that hard, as long as you're careful and follow the manual to make sure everything goes together.

(re)building an engine is certainly one of the things I'd like to do at some point, but unfortunately the only engines that I own at the moment are in cars and somewhat needed, plus if I'm going to be rebuilding an engine, it's likely to be in a somewhat 'enhanced' state, thus would need money spending on it.

Once I've cleared most of the bastid Corrado parts out of my garage, I am going to buy an old ally-blocked V8, strip it down and use the block and pistons as a coffee table tho :D

dinkies, lol yeah good project, you wouldn't be the first!

Didn't wish for my comments to come across the wrong way and i agree with your words but was more thinking of the forum as a hardcore of corrado enthusiasts but i know that doesn't mean that everyone has to be a mechanic, just spoke without contemplating my words first!

chris, this is the first car I have had that has been worth looking after or restoring thus clips like that are like brain transplant instructions. It all looks sound but I have absolutly no F+++++g idea what he did.

Im sure that time and time again things become like second nature but at the mo, fitting an uprated headlight loom is all a bit odd. dont get me wrong I have no troubs with learning new rado stuff but first time fitting stuff is a bit like a blind chap and a dirty bird. (directionless and messy)

Massive respect goes out to those who understand engines in that way, and one day im sure I will be able to change something without consulting the rado massiv, but in the meantime,

WOW
