Banana Man 0 Posted January 10, 2006 Anyone know of a good sealant to make a decent seal for my split rims having trouble finding any info on them, I was thinking RTV silicone sealant would do the job but am unsure and dont want to goto all the trouble of getting them back together to find that it's leaking again! Is there a recommended method of doing it as well, for instance letting the sealant semi harden and then join the 2 surfaces together, or do I put the together straight from the off and let them cure overnight? Any help would be appreciated thanks Ant
W3RKD 0 Posted January 10, 2006 That sealant will work fine.... what you need to do is. Assemble them but dont torque bolts just yet... now apply sealant then with finger (wet/soapy) run around bead to remove any air bubbles. Now torque to required setting and then once tight run finger around again to ensure perfect bead of sealant! let dry for 24hrs then refit tyre. To add to Darren's advise, make sure you clean the mounting surfaces of any old silcone, i used wire wool to do this. I also noticed the silcone cured much faster under compression so aim to get the rim bolted down in about 30-40mins to the backs.
NickVR6 0 Posted January 10, 2006 I had a lot of fun with mine, or rather the tyre fitters did, then a porka specialist did them in the end. I know they used unibond silicon sealant, about £8 a tube in the diy places. Just make sure it has as higher silicon content as poss, that what i was told and its done the job! Anyone know the actual torque setting for the bolts out of interest. presume most splities have similar bolts and torque requirements?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 11, 2006 Yeah you had severe amounts of fun with yours :-) Not sure what the torque setting is but on the ZW1 I rebuilt I just did em up to 15lb/ft which seemed to do the trick.
