bad handling

Hi guys im new to the forum, but need some advice

I bought my VR6 back in the summer, i had 2 new tyres fitted on the back just before xmas on standard 15'' rims, since then it is a nightmare to drive the handling is bad I like to drive my car as it should be,but every bump or un even bit of road makes the VR6 skip across the road. Not a nice drive. Any suggestions :?

Hi welcome aboard.

 

Did you have the balancing done on the car when the tyres were fitted? are they directional tyres and if so have they been fitted on correctly?

 

I'd go back to the palce you had them fitted and spoeak to them if I was you :D

check the pressures , skipping on the road like that usually suggests the pressures are too high

are the tyres the same manufacturer as you had previously ?

they have said every thing is ok, so im a little confussued not sure what the tyre pressure should be so i can check it. It was sugested that i have a shock leaking.

I had Toyo first bot have changed to Pirelli now and since then its been a nightmare.

you should be able to see the shock leaking (if it is) , this would cause the car to skip as the spring would bounce and the shock wouldnt damp it

 

just have a look you dont need to remove the wheel or anything but it will look damp on the bottom half of the shock

 

VR6.....

 

from "cold"

front 36psi

rear 32

(half laden car)

space saver wheel 60

 

these are recommended although i would go a little higher in the rear tbh

 

 

i've had pirelli and never had a problem soi dont think its the tyres tbh

I have looked at the shock and it is a little damp but it was the same before i changed the tyres. I will check pressures and see if this helps. A womens work is never done

Thought it looked a bit soft ... ah well, it was dark and raining one saturday night, as long as the car wasn't dragging it's arse on the ground I wasn't going to faff around any more... Will have to check it out.. (Still waiting for my replacement tyres!!)

Are you simply changing the defective damper or are you going to change all the dampers and springs?

 

If all you do is potter around then of course no point in watsing money going for new dampers all round.

 

If however you like to drive in fast road mode or do trackdays then unless the dampers are fairly new, you could end up with a odd handling car. Damper performance will degrade over time as the damper oil degrades.

 

Good opportunity to get some new sports suspension kit on ... ... and give your C that lizard down a drainpipe feel

If I were you, i'd uprate the suspension (( lower it around 30mm-40mm )) and leave it at that (( just my opinion ))

 

I think they look great in standard form other than the ride height (( it's too high! )) The standard wheels ((speedlines)) and body shape are perfect in my opinion.

ye it was a guy from Newquay,

so it a local car which is nice as well. If you lower it won,t you get trouble with speed humps etc and multi story car parks i probs now if i try to park in multi story. i do agree the height lets them down as standard.

If you drop it by 30-40mm and take it relatively easy over bumps you should be fine. It's only when you go further than that that you can start to encounter problems. I've never had problems with 40mm, but did have problems with 80mm. (( though i've not had a VR6, only 8 + 16v's and G60's . VR6's have a lower sump ))

 

I expect someone will be along shortly to recommend 'Koni TA' shocks and 'H&R' springs, i think they lower the car around 35mm so would be fine and would also improve the handling of the car dramatically , with suspension it's best to do it properly.

 

Triggermyson on here has a VR6 on Koni/H&R's and he's from Wadebridge so will be able to tell you if he has probs on the local(ish) roads. :)

Well, thats a coincedence, I was wondering the same thing!

 

I assume you mean the VAG specialist situated in an old barn?...I was thinking of popping in there for a chat to see what they'd charge for a service on my golf...I moved here just over a month ago so can't help with the local knowledge!

 

It looks OK though. If I find out their hourly rate i'll let you know.
