Where to service?

Recommended Posts

Hello folks,

Just taken delivery of a '94 Corrado VR6 after many many years of wanting one.

It seems to be running fairly well for a car of its age, but I'd like to have it thoroughly checked and serviced to make sure its running as well as it can.

I thought it'd be worthwhile asking in here to see if any of the scottish/glaswegian members have any good/bad experiences of garages in this part of the world, before I pay some cowboy mechanic - who may have never seen a VR6 - a fortune for nothing.

Was thinking of taking it to Verve (joking!), the Donaldson Brothers or Capaldi & Milligan (both indie VW specialists in Glasgow). Anyone know if these guys are much cop with Corrados? Or anyone have any suggestions of a better place to go (without driving hundreds of miles!)?

Cheers,

Petros

Hiya mate, congrats on the purchase!

Have a look in the suppliers section there may be some recommended garages there. There are quite a few Scottish members that i'm sure will help you out! :D

(( i expect this thread will get moved in there...gives the mods something to do   ))

Thanks for the welcome Walsey.

And thanks Mods for moving the post; must confess I didn't read the description under 'Suppliers Forum', and I assumed it was a forum for suppliers, rather than about suppliers. How to make a good first impression!

Anyway, had a read over some of the comments on Star and Donaldson Bros.

I think I might take the car into Donaldson's soon. Anyone know roughly what a service is likely to cost? (I know, it depends on what work needs done, but ball park figures assuming the only things needing replaced are the air/pollen/oil/fuel filters).

Donaldsons seem ok, I had some work done in the past, there were a few minor issues but nothing worth getting into.

I think they must have moved though, im pretty sure the building they were in has been torn down. Dont know where they are now.

I usually make the trip to Star Performance if its a job I dont want to tackle myself.

Yeah, they have moved. They're now in Clydebank - on Dumbarton Road just west of the railway bridge in a small industrial estate. Same phone number though.

Had a service done there - came to £110 including a new set of plugs, oil filter and oil. Doesn't seem too bad to me.

Bedrock Veedubs know their rados and they are in motherwell.

Very expensive when it comes to corrados and vr6's ive found in the past though.

Was passing that way yesterday, so dropped in to speak to them.

The guy said he only ever used original VW parts, filters and fluids which would explain why they might not be cheap. Seemed very knowledgeable and enthusiastic though.

Booked the car in for a health-check on the Rolling Road there, and the chap offered to throw in an overall check-up on the engine condition (etc.) at the same time. Can't argue with that, can you?

Petros, I was thinking more about the locality for you, i've never actually had work done there yet but i've seen some of the cars they've built and spoke to john and hes well clued up. Let me know how you get on.

Kinda forgot about this thread for a while

Still, feedback on Bedrock:

Been there a few times now for various bits of work. They really do seem to know their stuff, and I don't think their prices were unreasonable - had a few cheap repairs done before putting the car in for some serious work.

I put the car in to get new springs, dampeners, suspension arm, bushes, exhaust, discs and pads fitted and to have the injectors cleaned, a compression test done and a few other odds. The labour I was charged couldn't have come close to covering the number of hours they actually spent on the car.

Not the quickest turn around in the world to be honest, but that seems to be down to availability of parts rather than the mechanics dragging their heels.

All in, I'd happily recomend them.
