Ebay VR6 Chip

Recommended Posts

Seems too cheap to be true but worth a shot at £30 I suppose!

I suspect it could be a copy of an AMD chip or something, easy for someone to do that has chip blowing equipment.

Indeed. You'll know straight away if it's a con as the car won't even start, especially if it's an encrypted code and requires a decryptor board and isn't supplied. All rechippers scramble the code so that it can't be copied but if it plugs and plays, game on ;-)

It's a piece of P changing the chip out too, 30 mins work tops :-)

If it is cosher, look for reduced flat spots and better pick up in the midrange and top end. If no difference at all, it's a blatant copy of the stock chip and we can bash him with some chunky negative feedback :-)

Gotta be worth a try. Report all Mr Jubbly dubbly 6s....

I quizzed him extensively before I bought the 8v digifant chip.

He said it was a copy of a belgian tuner's chip (maybe he has access to the source?), wouldn't say anymore.

It honestly improved the driveability of the digifant - he explained that the chip polled the sensors more frequently so gave a smoother drive. Not sure on the power gains (would anyone notice 5bhp?) but it defo increased the rev limit.

Might be worth a punt at £30, would like to see a rolling road comparison though, since the VR is already pretty smooth and doesn't feel like it needs the rev limit raising!

EDIT: he offers money back after 7 days so no risk really??!

Limit will be raised to 7000, which is only a few hundred rpm over the standard 2.9 limiter (2.9s have a higher limit than the 2.8 engines btw) and will enable a higher top speed, if the engine has enough legs to pull round that far in 5th. Unlikely in standard form.

Digifant needs all the help it can get, so improvements would be noticeable on that ECU but Motronic isn't bad to begin with, so improvements will be quite minor, but he does quote 7hp at the wheels, so add 40% to that to get your crank figure.

If you've had good experience of his stuff in the past, then buy away, he sounds OK. Let us know the results!

The original ECU in mine didn't have a socket for the chip, it was soldered directly onto the board. Pain to unsolder a 28-pin chip without cutting the legs off, wanted it whole to copy. Turned out this chip wasn't standard according to some ECU specialist company I used. Must have come out of the factory like it though, no signs of being resoldered.

Ended up with a Golf VR6 ECU, and this came with a socket. Tried the original one and a BBR star chip, timed accelerations if anything were slower with the BBR chip.

Both chips were easy to copy BTW, bit-for-bit copy onto new EPROMS costing about £1.50 EA.
