You could get a good VR6 for that kind of money, or a very good G60.

Just go and test drive as many as you can, because even though a chipped G60 will be putting out similar power to a standard VR6, the driving experience is very different.

I would reccommend buying off the forum if you can, cars come up all the time in the classified section. Not only are you guaranteed (more or less..) that it will have been well looked after, you can also in some cases view the cars history, and they tend to be pretty cheap on here as well!

For £3500 i'd be looking to buy a VR6.

vr6 would be my rec too.

although if you're going to be doing much track driving, maybe a G60 would be better - bit less weight up front and possibly more track-favoured characteristics?

imo, the vr is definately a fast motorway attack tool rather than a track car. although saying that, the vr is plenty good on the twisties too.

but whatever you get, good luck and start saving for repairs now mate ;)

Also, you may want to look for one that has already been lowered, uprated brakes etc as it'll cost for you to do those things, providing its what floats your boat of course :D

To be honest most cars of 15 odd years old have had some paintwork, even when people think they haven't. If you work in the bodyshop industry you will be able to tell the difference between a bit of a blow over and a big repair. If there is any sign of rust at all walk away as they only rust if there has been damage, period. Be that a small chip of paint thats rusted (bad maintenance) or a panel line rusting which means a bad repair.

The G60 is not really suited to track driving as it tends to get very hot and its power is lower down the revs (not really a track ideal). The obvious choice is the VR , but you could also get a really cheap valver and do an engine transplant....

have to disagree there, I don't know if this happens to all Rado's but my G60 had quite bad laquer peel on the original paint. It looked as though it probably started from stone chips but the way it peeled back was terrible. There was actual bubbles under the laquer that could be moved around if u pressed down on them. I saw the same thing on my mates 16V so don't know if it is a common thing?! Maybe VW used rubbish laquer back then?

P.S. If I were you I would spend £2500 on the car and save the other £1000 for all the bits you will have to fix on it!!

Hmmm..... they are not the best if you are looking for something fairly economical to run to be honest, but it depends on your priorities. You have to be realistic and any car that is about 15 years old will have some problems even if they are just minor.

There are a couple of g60's on autotrader at around the 3K mark. There is a green one with very low mileage or a red one with a private plate worth a few quid! The red one used to belong to my mechanic it has just had a recent supercharger rebuild, although it was done by Jabba, I'm pretty sure it was stage 4 with a chip and pulley as well but it doesn't mention it in the ad. I don't know how close they are to you though?!

i dont mind the usual probs associated with cars of this age but i dont want to be reaching into my wallet every 30secs to keep it on the road, if i wanted that sort of grief id buy an escort rs turbo! is this the sort of car they are?

How dare you! This is a far superior car to an rs turbo. How can you even compare the 2 :D

I thought you said you wasn't a boy racer

all jokes aside.... I have never owned an RS turbo so probably not qualified to answer this but IMO they aren't nearly as bad as RS turbo's (I can remember 1 of my mates having endless problems that ended up costing him a fortune).

Ive owned two R.S turbos back when i had hair.

A mk1 and a mk2

mk2's were just boring nothing good about them at all.

the mk1,was lovely for what it was,but just like corrados they attract certain a type of driver and I reckon there wont be many Mk1 R.S.turbos that havent been crashed, bashed, hashed, modded,or just blown up !

Corrado owners seem far more sedate and let peoples eyes do the admiring,

rather than the revs.

It depends what you want really,We have a 16 valve and its more reliable than my mitsubishi and thats saying somthing, paintwork or getting it done is just a fact of life owning an older vehicle.,mines got 60k on it and its heading that way of starting to need touch ups ooerr

hmm not sure some of you totaly understand were im coming from! iv always owned older cars (oldest my '72 escort newest '90 RS) so i understand that wear and fatigue in parts will occure, they have too, nothing lasts forever i was just checking that there not cars from hell  as mate s have brought lancias and renaults and to be fair i wouldnt keep a dog in em! when you see the cars i drive youl understand im not a boy racer! things should look standard, and the only parts i beleive should be messed with are the bits out of sight, suppose street sleepers youd call em, but definatly not a fibreglass bumperd space ship driving chav youd find thrashing round a shopping centre! :fadein: corrados sound like a good motor think il be treating my self some time soon! cheers

I thought the paint was pretty good on corrado's generally, the metallic vr6 I used to have had totally original paint and had no laquer lift anywhere.

Suppose it depends how often they get cleaned/waxed, rust comes about from bad stonechips that aren't attended to.

I've noticed a few C owners have thought their wheel arch lips were bubbling underneath the paint, but what they were actually were looking at is the textured finish of the wax sealant applied to the arch lips before painting!
