buying a G60 or a VR6>????

Recommended Posts

i want to sell my golf 3 GTI n upgrade to a bigger engine such as the VR6 or G60 corrado. I hear a G60 is a better more solid engine is this true and what other facts should i know b4 getting into 1? Ive only driven 1 other 16V corrado so am a newbie to the car. Help on what 2 look 4 and what 2 avoid would be great. My budget is 4K

cheers. Mark

Theres a buyers guide stickied on one of the forums mate, and, not meaning to shoot you down in your first post, but this has been covered loads of times before in other posts. use the search and you'll find a whole host of opinions.

I dont think the g60 is any stronger than the VR, both have their pitfalls and advantages, although charger detonation seems more common than chain failure (the major 'worry' for most people when buying a VR).

drive both, find which you like best and buy one! 4k will be plenty for either with prices as they are at the moment.

welcome to the forum too!

Hi mate.

There's a buyers guide, and technical spec of each flavour of raddo in the Knowledge Base

It's worth having a look through, loads of helpfull info in there.

With regards to the Vr6 vs G60 debate...that's a bit of a can of worms...have a look through the forum using the search facility, there's been alot of discussions compareing the two engines. :D

Enjoy the search!

EDIT-- beat me to it Chris! :p

i think the vr's go forever if serviced and never had any issues.

so would any1 say that the VR6 is a better (easyer car to maintain and run) than the G60, bearing in mind insurance costs and parts and labour costs. ive always liked the corrado and i currently drive a Mk3 GTI 2.0L 8V

http://www.clubgti.com/forum/forum_post ... 99538&PN=1 its 4 SALE. Would a 1.8L G60 be better to upgrade into as oppsed to a 2.0L 16v or a 2.8L VR6.???

Not really.

The VR lump is more complicated, so it's harder to work on and harder to diagnose if it goes wrong, but it's just as reliable as the others if treated right.

Which engine you choose really depends on how much you want to pay on insurance and petrol more than anything else, they're all pretty much the same in terms of "reliability" and basic servicing costs.

both are good engines. in general a 4 is cheaper than a 6 cos theres less but the charger adds somewhat to that. cant say i see them as weak as long as you dont abuse or neglect it.

smaller pulleys and chips help the G60 be a vr pace wise but the "ners" get shorter than a vR as you restict its revability

corrado VR's are 2.9, and I'd say yes, a g60 would be a better option than a 2.0 valver. It depends what you like, lazy effortless power from a VR or a bit more ballsy rawness from a g60.

in terms of running costs, as i said they both have pitfalls. the g60 is going to need the charger doing at some point, but otherwise they're fairly solid (they're the 1.8 8v engine basically) where as the VR is a 'bit' more thirsty and parts are slightly more expensive.

something else to consider is that (AFAIK) none of the g60's had the facelifted interiour which, IMO, is a bit nicer than the earlier ones and only the very late g60's had the facelifted body. which all VR's have.

corrado VR's are 2.9

i know that most are 2.8 arnt they? i read about the different sizes. isnt that due to euro cars and uk cars? the supercharger just sounds like an expensive bit of kit. Does n e 1 know of the servicing costs and how long the thing lasts 4?

Supercharger rebuild costs ~£400, but then the VR timing chains will cost you ~£700. Both are once-in-100k-miles jobs, if all goes well, so there you go.

ahh ok chris, u jogged my memory!!

just had a chat to my insurance broker and the G60 and the VR6 are both group 16 insurance so quie high and the bloody fiat coupe i had my eye on is a group 19! FFS so its between the G60 and the VR6 but like the idea of low end grunt that im guessing the G60 will have. The VR being a screamer! lol

Group 16 is low for a VR6. They are usually 18 with most companies as far as I know.

Which insurance company are you with corradoyouknow?

Also, you might be suprised at low end in a G60, they don't always meet expectations in 1st and 2nd gears, it's 3rd where the fun really starts!

Have a look at this thread for example. If you search around this place is a minefield of info. :-P

ADRIAN FLUX Walesy, its exactly the smae price 2 insure a G60 or a VR6. Both are a bit higher that id rather be paying for some1 who has nearly 7 years no claims!. If the theroy of the G60 is that it has the lower rev range power would this mean alot of the examples left on the market would have been ragged or driven with a heavy right foot in city driving for example.

Yeah, surprised at your broker's rating for the corrado mate, you sure he's got it right ?

As a guide for Corrado, these are the banding most companies use

1.8 16V = IG 15

2.0 8V = IG 16

2.0 16V = IG 17

1.8 G60 = IG 17

2.9 VR6 = IG 18

I use Highway Insurance for mine through Brentacre Insurance Services in Swansea and they rate the G60 as IG 16 and VR6 as 17, so that's why I thought it was a bit odd, no matter.
