Major service time on the TDI...

Recommended Posts

So the moment i've been dreading is nearly upon me.. 120k service is looming on the Golf and its probably going to bankrupt me!

Major service + cambelt (which I may just hold off on for another few thousand miles as technically its not due for another 4000) + I think an engine mount is seriously on its way out...

It'll be a safe bet dropping it off at Stealth as I know it'll be done right but not looking forward to the final bill :|

Ouch. :(

So are you going to sell it on after and buy a C?!

The thought had occurred yeah.. i'm still thinking about a tidy valver as I just don't think i'm financially ready for a VR6 yet!

Will see how I feel after its all sorted!

Thankfully mine just dropped from about 500 to 380 after I moved house.. hooray for living in an area mainly inhabited by pensioners ;)

lol no - I fit right in ;) I'm far more content with a night in, a good meal and a DVD than I am out on the piss. But then Leamington has some great bars a mere stones throw away from where I live so the option is always there for a good drink and a stagger home! :)

Well just spoke to Vince.. its booked in for the 24th of March (pay day!) to have the service done. Just gonna get Vince to inspect the cam belt and see if its really needing doing or not yet!

By some amazing coincidence, Haywire is in getting more stuff done to his car that day! Don't think i'll see you tho Kev as i'll be dropping my car off first thing then getting a lift back to work!

Whats a major service then?

Cambelt, tensioner, waterpump, aux belt, oil, all filters and a check over the rest of the car?? Shouldn't be too pricey..? ?

I need to do my cambelt on my tdi, its on 42k miles but its aproaching 6 years old so i need to do it before the worthersee trip. Will do all the filters, oil, brake fluid, front brake disc + pads. So I'm hoping it won't cost me much more than 100 quid in parts. I suppose you have to pay labour on top which is the expensive factor.. :(

The belt, roller, water pump and bolts comes to about £100 alone plus the drive belt filters etc... looking at £150 just in consumables...

Jim getting the cambelt done in the same day means less grief organising another day to go there right? If it due in 4000 miles i very much doubt they are going to say its ok, What about the repercussions if it snaps? A cam belt doeant have to look bad to snap...

Also what about the labour to strip it and inspect it?

Well my house is only 8 miles from Stealth Racing door to door - so getting there is not a major issue for me. Can put my bike in the back of the Golf and just cycle back from there! :D

Its just the cost - as Steve says about £150 in consumables alone and the labour is fairly hefty - about 3 or 4 hours I think?

I'm not competent with a spanner and don't do any work myself on my car - I do some basic jobs but nothing like cambelts, engine mounts, etc i'm afraid :(

I'll see how my money goes through the month and consider getting it done at the same time as the service but.. hm... :|

Yes, on diesels the cambelt is under a bit more strain too compard to petrol engines, the damage usually is greater, if it snaps. A mate of mine had his cambelt go in his Escort diesel delivery van: Write-off. But, yes, that's Ford, of course

Jim, I may just have a bit of time over the next few weekends (not tomorrow, Storm's getting a new radiator and waterpump :-) )to help you do this, but, and this is the but, I tend to not work under pressure on such things. For example, I took plenty of time on my C to do all the belts and tensioner pulley, as I wasn't dependent on the C. It was a lot simpler to do the same job on both my Roccos, however.

I hear that doing the timing on a diesel is a real pig - so i'm not sure i'd want to submit you to have to try and do that particular job but I appreciate the offer mate! :)

That and I need my car as a daily driver so time is not something I have with it - like the luxuary of a second car or anything so another reason why i'm just going to have to drop it off at Stealth and just get em to do it.
