vr6 rough idle after a night of heavy rain

does anyone now what gets wet when it rains heavily. my corrado is very stutterey only after a really heavy rainful in the morning. it clears after i have driven it for 5 min (assume the water evaportates), it is the same as when water gets in to a disributor but tthe vr6 does not have one.

 

any ideas

Nope, that will be a coilpack unless it's had an engine replacement for an early one :)

still has the original engine and yes it has a coilpack, can't see any where where water would get in

Look in the scuttle panel area, it may be that you've had water ingress into the ECU. But this is classic symptoms of a coil pack or HT lead problem, tbh. The general dampness after a night of solid rain is enough to increase the conductivity of the parts of the coil pack that aren't supposed to conduct, if there's any weaknesses in the structure, no matter how small ...

Coilpacks get cracked with heat and age.

 

If you spray a mist of water onto coilpack with engine idling you may get engine faltering which will confirm this is likely to be problem.

Out of bright light you may see arcing to coincide with the engine stuttering.
