Shaking at speed- Any ideas

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Things seem to go wrong on my Corrado storm faster than I can fix them :(. The latest problem is a noticeable steering shake at 80mph+ (private roads of course 8) ) ) It feels exactly like the wheels are out of balance except you cant 'drive through' the vibration. Had front wheels checked & balanced- still no better. Could rear wheel imbalance cause this problem? Otherwise could any point me in the direction of which bushes would most likely have given up the ghost?

Cheers

I'd go with bushes on this, or possibly a dead shock (less likely from what you've said though...) Otherwise, as FurkiG60 says, could be a buckled wheel... :?

Get your wheels re-balanced and checked for straightness and then have a test to see if that's cured it...

check that the bolts are on securely......mine had a very bad shake at speed just after i had my CV-boots done by a garage as a casher.......turned out that the wheel bolts were only on finger tight

I had an incurable wobble that turned out to be one of the front brake discs not sitting flush against the hub. We removed the discs, cleaned up the hubs and the back of the discs and it was cured.

(This was after I'd replaced ball joints, track rod ends, balanced the wheels twice etc..)

Generally if you feel the vibration through the steering wheel it's the front wheels at fault. If you feel it through the whole car it's the rears. :D

I know exactly what you mean and sympathise with you. Mine has arrived at the troublesome 80,000 mile stage where lots of things seem to need doing. The previous owner was wise to get shot of it at 73K!

If you can't drive through the vibration I think it could be worn dampers. Knackered bushes normally manifest themselves as shoddy handling, tugging to the left or right under braking and clonking over severe bumps.

Could also be top mounts but depends on mileage as VR6 top mounts are good for at least 75K. The rubber bush compresses way before the cartridge bearing collapses.

That said, it could just be wheel imbalance. Not all tyre fitters do a good job of it and I had to have mine done 3 times (at different places) to resolve it.

Hi Lenny,

I like that idea about the discs not being flush with the hub - The only thing is I don't think the discs have been changed since new (its on 78K- does that sound right?) so I doubt the discs have ever been off. Was your problem with original discs or had they been replaced previously (its just that I haven't always had this problem & the discs have never been off since I had the car)

Cheers for all the advice all

Mike
