possibly fryed vr?

Recommended Posts

ok, so ive owne4d it a little more than 24 hours.

on the way home the misfire got worse and when sat in a jam on the m3 it was uber lumpy.

so today ive had the plugs and leads changed at autotechnik in southampton.

theyve taken one look at the plugs and told me the bores are glazed.

theres oil leaking from the side of the block above the alternator and some from around the dizzy.

the plug/lead change has transformed the car.....but still not to quite how it was on the test drive.

i guess what im asking is.......how likely is it that the bottom end is fucked?

theyre quoting me 25 hours for a rebuild, top and bottom end.

which is fair enough if it needs doing.

the car is on 98 k and has had one middle aged hindu solicitor owner....i cant imagine him abusing the poor thing.

someone say something nice/reasuring to calm me down?

er..... only thing i might think is head gasket. has your oil gone creamy?

but more importantly, autotechnik are good but there labour rate are steep to say the least. i'd try to find some one local that knows there v-dubs. i discovered 'best auto' in winchester not so long ago. only used them for tyres and supention geomotry but they said they do quite alot of work on modding dubs and reasonably priced to. They knew what my car was which is always a thumbs up if you ask me :)

How do they know the bores are glazed from looking at the plugs? Is it possible to be that accurate just by inspecting the plugs?

im in southampton mate.

and as for the bores being glazed......i dont know.

im going to see steve at pitstop/gwerks next week so he can actually run a few tests on the engine....cos they didnt bother.

all in its about £2k......im guessing a 24v conversion is more than that?

anyone else shed any light on the likelyness of the whole engine needing rebuilding?

i have £2k that can be spent...thats not going to get me a 24v properly installed is it?

2nd opinion required there mate, bottom end very unlikely to be f**ked if it was ok on a test run. Either you're wrong or they're talking sh1te about the bore glazing too.

Thought all 2.9s had coilpacks and the early golfs were the ones that had dizzys

Nope, you can have either dizzy or coil pack OBD1 Golfs or Corrados.

So what was the conclusion anyway?

basically, there is no untoward knocking or poping, virtually zero crankcase compression, the car has been seriously under driven by the previous owner ( been left idle for 6 months ) who apparently drove like `miss daisy `, it`s going to need a quick oil flush and additional oil change to free up the lifters and a good blast up the road to get the `cobwebs out`, it may well benefit from a new fuel filter and a check on the co emissions but nothing major had showed itself, it`s a pukka car stan

....... my car is a dizzy too
