Is it possible to fix cracked alloy?

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I have the 328i sport BBS's - 2 piece but a similar shape to the RS's

The outer lip on the inside has an inch crack, which deflates the tyre.

Can this be mended and where?

A new one costs £400!

Thanks

Neil

I beleive it can be fixed... wouldn't know where to suggest though :?

Get the refurbed ones with black centres that are on here ;)

I really wouldn't trust a fixed one myself, I know there are companies that offer it, but I wouldn't get it done. It would be a weak part of the wheel.

yeah, i'm with xbones :)

although a proper weld 'should' hold up, but it would still give me the willies

Are they splitties? Can't you just replace the dish plate?

If the worst comes to the worst, it can be fillet welded and ground back, should be strong enough.

I've had cracked wheels welded before. Not had any problem with them, but the guy was a professional alloy/stainless TIG welder, and it's all he did for a living, so he was pretty good at it.

It's a two piece split - just the center is removable, there is no inside and outside dish, all one piece.

Can anyone recommend a good place near Bracknell?

Someone at work has said it would put the wheel out of balance?

Exact Weld in East Grinstead did an excellent job on my alloy you cant even tell it's been done. I had an inch crack in my alloy last year, booked it in and they did it there and then for £10. Billy bargain if you ask me, cheaper than £700 for a new alloy :D

They're number is 01342 311595 if you want to give them a call not too far from Guildford really,

the wheels off this are currently on my mk4

one of them had a 2" long crack in it, and an equally large flat spot on the rim.

you'd never tell it's been repaired. it balances up as good as the rest, and has seen service on a croft track day without giving up on me (and I ran wide coming out of the hairpin and didn't half whack the edge of the track coming back off the grass too)

so long as it's done professionally there shouldn't be a problem at all.
