Fiat coupe turbo?

As im off uni just been to clean the c and ended up having a little play with a fiat coupe 20v turbo! didnt no much about them performance wise but i thought its only a fiat!

 

id say it was pretty even all the way down the dual carriageway, he did start to pull away ever so slightly at about 100 when i had to change into 5th, but then we ran out of road, felt i couldve done a bit better but just looked and these things have a 2 litre 5 pot with 220bhp standard and this one looked pretty mint, think i should be pretty chuffed with the c's effort, being 14 years old too! he moved over lanes and had a grin on his face, seemed bit impressed as well as surprised! what du reckon, anyone else had a bit of a go with these?

 

off to fit a cold air feed now from the brake duct through the cc hole, see how it goes, the hunt for cooler air goes on :lol:

yeah thats good mate im surprised as in a straight line they go like the clappers ive seen a few razzing about only raced one in my golf and it blew me away but i know they pull a very impressive 0-60 in sub 6's or something like that and they top out pretty high too!

Yeah ugly little bugger, but hellishly fast. I went out in a mates old one and was really impressed! The interiors are pretty nice too... for a fiat!

They're good cars. Suretrak ATB diff, brembo brakes, good engine, decent amount of caster etc etc. It's what the Corrado VR6 should have been, technically speaking. The Fiat coupe was defo performance orientated, the VR6 (and I'm using that as it's the Fiat's closest rival, no disrespect to the 4 pot Cs) was more cruisey/comfort biased.....with chod brakes, useless wipers etc etc....they're chalk and cheese on paper!!

 

However, in reality, FIAT's efforts don't quite match up to the VR's all round ability and appeal.

 

20VTs can boost up to 280hp without much effort and expense. Can go a lot higher but it gets expensive.

 

Anyway, I have come up against a few of them when my car was in various states of tune and none of them caused my car to break into a significant sweat.

Didn't they do a 16v Fiat turbo as well? I expect a G60 would come out a lot better in a race with one of those over the 20v.

theres a fiat punto round by me thats got the 20v turbo lump in it out of one of those. apparently he spent a fortune havin it fitted cos it didn't fit and alsorts had to be adapted. it goes like sh!t off a shovel

seems like there pretty nippy then! it was definately a very tidy car with creme leather interior! think it was the 20v turbo, had the pinnifarina badge on the side, kept up with him ok but he was edging away slightly, still pretty pleased tho 8)

I'm pretty sure they all had the designer's badge. I'm also confident that they all look bleedin' identical apart from the engine badging. Sure it was a turbo? :)

well if it wasnt it was still pretty fast, mines no slouch and it was keeping about even ground between us, cant remember the reg but was in mint condition, and thewres me thinkin its only a fiat! think twice next time, good laugh tho!

There were 3 cars on my list of affordable (sighs!) sporty cars for around 5k

C VR6

Nissan 200sx

Fiat Coupe 16T or 20vT

 

I got the S14 200 to start with, took the boost up to about 260/270 but hated its complete lack of character, and all or nothing performance, certainly shat myself on a few wet roundabouts! It was reliable but felt fragile if that makes sense. Only had it 2months.

 

Then bought the C because i wanted some solid build back and because i didnt like the sound of the fiat cambelt bill which most need or were coming up to. Oh how that seems insignificant now!!

 

Blooming nippy number though, 5pots even sound nice, but ancilleries fail regularly accordingto a mate who has one. They are ubber bargain money now though for what you get, but why so cheap you have to ask !

This car seemd to come up here every year or so- and each time it gets a different opinion. I think they are gorgeous cars that would still drop jaws if Fiat released it tomorrow.

 

I had a blast with one- he was four up and I was on my own- he never moved an inch from my bumper as we both booted down a lovely straight bit of road near where we live- and I know my VR is pretty healthy.

 

I was looking at them on the trader yesterday in fact- the only criticism is the seats are a bit like armchairs; but then some got a Recaro option which redresses the balance- and they are cheap as chips too

The Fiat coupe had 3 engines, the base 16V (non-turbo), the 20V and the 20V turbo.

they originally came with the 16v in n/a and turbo forms then were replaced by the 20v lumps in n/a and turbo :wink:

 

so at anytime in their life they only had 2 engine options

 

 

 

as for the performance of the 20v turbo.............i'd only feel comfortable with a Corrado in twisties...........cos in a straight line i'd put my money on the Fiat everytime

if anyone is considering get one make sure its had cam belt change as fiat take whole engine out and the bill is £1100

i think they were nice cars, designed by arguably the best design house in the world and had a good range of engines.... the c and the fiat coupe were too revolutionary and different looking for joe public to appreciate, but if you love car design, then these are two design icons, look at the c&rap in car show rooms now,,,,,, the only really nice coupes come from alfa's stable..... the germans have lost the plot (apart from porsche), why does everyone think that all cars have to look the same,,,,,,, but the c wins over the fiat on build quality everytime. How many Fiat coupes do you see with 170k+ on them and still going strong?

Fiat will charge over £1k for the cambelt change...........tho IIRC there was some Fiat Coupe boys on here telling us(last time we had this discussion) that there are places who can do the job in-situ a fair bit cheaper

 

 

lookswise its alright.............designed by BMW guru Chris Bangle,the only flaw is that the Alfa GTV came out about the same time and thats just gorgeous compared to the Fiat

a mate of mine's girlfriend recently bought a 20vt coupe having had boring 1.2 punto's and clio's for years, it really surprised me, it was actually very nice to drive and certainly feels quite a lot quicker than a g60 to drive (probably due to the way the turbo kicks in quite savagely) and the diff really make a difference.

but i didnt think the handling was quite as good as the corrado, it felt a bit soggy and front end heavy on tight corners but the diff was great when pulling out of corners.

her coupe is ink black with poo brown leather but it is very comfortable, the only things that would put me off getting one is the fiat (Fix It Again Tomorrow) reputation and the style of them, i'm not sure i like them enough to buy one but from having a good look around it and sorting a few little niggles on it it actually seems very well put together (for a fiat).

 

edit: cambelt change cost her £350 at a local specialist and had the clutch done at the same time for £200 on top of that all in.
