Austin 0 Posted July 19, 2006 Just had my windscreen replaced, and there's some silicone sealant/mastik remaining on the paintwork around the windscreen seals (previous owner had applied a layer!). Any ideas on removing it? Cheers
gradeAfailure 0 Posted July 19, 2006 Carefully cut the edge next to the windscreen with a blade, making sure you don't damage paint, then rub and scratch it off with a fingernail...
Henny 0 Posted July 19, 2006 ...or go to B&Q and buy some silicone sealant remover....
Guest Posted July 19, 2006 can you actually get that? i'd have done it the way gradeAfailure described
Henny 0 Posted July 19, 2006 yup.... used it plenty in the past... pee&poo whore-houses stock it... Basically, it just softens it up so you can wipe it off with kitchen roll (or similar) 8)
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 19, 2006 Bleach softens Silicon..... wang a bit of neat Domestos on it and leave for an hour, then it should come off OK. Sealant remover is pants. It tries to soften the silicon by crystalising it but I've never found it to be any good at all tbh.
Austin 0 Posted July 19, 2006 Thanks all - is bleach OK on the paintwork?
Henny 0 Posted July 19, 2006 yup, bleach won't affect paint...
Supercharged 2 Posted July 19, 2006 I think methalated spiritits is the best thing to remove silicon but not sure if it will affect the paint or not...
Trig 0 Posted July 19, 2006 I've used supposed silicon remover in the past and it's pretty rubbish IMO, all it does is send it back to the way it was when it came out of the tube - still a nightmare to deal with.
