Sorry to hear that but like with any car manufacturer you will get the occasional duff one.

So I wouldn't write VW off yet!

I work closely with Volkswagen so could perhaps help point you in the right direction but need to know a bit more:

1. When did your dad buy it?

2. Has it got full VWSH

3. Did it have a full VW warranty and is in still "live"

4. Is it still being paid for - if bought on finance and theres a dispute like this, the finance house are legally obliged to act on your behalf due to the law of 1/2's and 1/3's

5. Which VW retailer was it bought from and which retailer has dropped this bombshell

It may be a case of looking for a gesture of goodwill from VW - unfortunately they are not particularly good on this point

Ah yes - because your dads Golf has packed up, the entire company that is Volkswagen is a complete load of b*ll*cks - come on mate!

You get bad engines - it happens!

Speak to an independent specialist.. Volkswagen rarely want to roll their sleeves and get their hands dirty with stuff like this. If they can't fix it with plug and play solutions, its often more than they want to tackle.. if its just wiring I can't believe it cannot be fixed without the need for a whole new engine.

You're based in the West Midlands - why not give the very helpful chaps at Stealth Racing a call? 01926 812259...

Well brand new TDI PD engines aren't cheap so that doesn't surprise me...

Ph right ok, surely he can get a second hand one for a fair bit cheaper?

But I agree, get a second opinion! They'll do anything to get money outta you!

I remember when BMW had major engine issues with the 4 cylinder units - thousands of cars were off the road for weeks / months due to thermostat problems - they treated their customers like dirt - well, my colleagues ended up in Corsa's for ages - then there was the problem with the 6 cylinder lumps having iffy liners that meant they needed complete new engines - I'd suggest to your dad to view BMW with the same level of doubt / concerm / scepticism as all other manufacturers

The BMW problem was due to a nickel lining on the cyl. bores wearing out due to high levels of sulphur in unleaded petrol, BMW replaced the engines irrespective of age so long as the car had a full service history, Jaguar (nee Ford) had the same problem with the S type Duratec V6 3.0 and the V8 engined cars up untill 2001, they used alloy blocks with a nickel coating which was again worn away by the high levels of sulphur in petrol. Jaguar, from 2001 started using iron blocks, also the sulphur levels in unleaded have dropped by a very large amount (i think by as much as 60%) since 2001

Jaguar agreed to replace all blocks where cars had full service history and had covered less than 100,000 miles.

This is, in my opinion a fair policy two companys respecting their customers and doing the correct thing!

By the way all of this information is available on the internet, i know because.......well, i know.

Well we're all entitled to an opinion mate.

At the end of the day the car is 6 years old.. i'm not saying that it SHOULD have packed up in such a catastrophic way but all i'm saying is that it happens! Of course i'd be gutted if it happened to me - i'd be peed off i'd been given a £400 bill let alone a £4000 one!

But its the nature of cars. We wouldn't have such well used technical support forums if they worked all the time would we ;)

jim,

i`m not going to get into an argument here but the car has done 37000 miles,

Why does it have to be the length of time? do i have to drive it every day? if i had have driven average mileage it would have packed up over 3 years ago !!!

It`s not the nature of cars, these days imho

it`s not the nature of cars when ( cough hawk ....spit) give a 5 year guarantee.

karma

;)

this is my son`s username anyway

EDIT:

I`m not going to start comparing, complaining and slagging e.t.c.

what is the point?

end of thread follows

............THE END..........

I'm just confused.

I wasn't trying to start an argument mate - hence me trying to dispense some advise on my original post to contact a VW specialist for a bit of impartial advice! Please feel to go back and read my post!

I was only merely commenting that 's*it happens' sometimes.. its inevitable these cars/engines will leave the factory with some sort of gremlin in them waiting to come out.

Sheesh.
