mtc R32 0 Posted October 10, 2006 The Wife has been doing my NUT in for awhile now!!! She wants a Smart car to bomb around in for her and the baby... After many, many arguments... I have decided to give in and start looking for one... The Best is out of all the colours available.. She wants one in PINK  Says that way I'll never drive it and thrape it all over the place :D So guys.... Has anyone had one and any pointers for a guide on buying??? Most of them appear to be LHD and I'll pay premium prices for a RHD!!! Needs to be fairly cheapish as she not the most careful of drivers  Cheers Guys
pkripper 0 Posted October 10, 2006 Early ones are LHD, later ones are RHD. The one you want is a "for 2" Passion as this is the higher spec model. You can get a really good high spec one with leather, aircon etc etc for £4k on around 54 plate. They are a really safe car as well, ABS, ESP, traction control. If you get one with a Brabus kit, you can get 101 BHP out of the little beast and they fly, I had one as loaner and it was like a mini 911, had paddel shift and that, it has got to be the fastest way round town on 4 wheels. Campaign 0 Posted October 10, 2006 Pretty safe, and very spacious for two - for an extra £1500 or so you can have whatever colour you like on the outside (including any graphics you like too) - my mate had a leopard skin one 8), complete with seat trims and fluffy dice and the ultimate accessory "Smart Arse" badge on the back :)
Jim 2 Posted October 10, 2006 Watched a clip on Fifth Gear where they stacked one into a solid concrete block at something ridiculous like 60MPH. The passenger cabin was still almost completely in tact.. to be fair it was very impressive :)
Andy665 0 Posted October 10, 2006 The cheapest and earliest ones are going to be LHD but far more RHD have been sold. Massive amounts of accessories and specialists to personalise. The later the better as far as the cap gearbox is concerned and probably worth seeking one out with the optional "flappy paddles", seemed to be constant upgrades to the gearbox smoothness during its life. mtc R32 0 Posted October 10, 2006 Just been reading a few article about these..... Petrol and DIESEL  Certainly dont need to visit many fuel stations... Can these things really do over 100mph ???? Surely not  Gonna try and convince her that pink is out of the question
Andy665 0 Posted October 10, 2006 I believe the diesel was never officially sold in the UK and the petrol ones were limited to mid 80's mph - limiter is very often removed though
godskitchen 0 Posted October 10, 2006 the dont do corners too well, besides that i quite liked driving it, more space that you would think.
Foggystorm 0 Posted October 10, 2006 My missus had one for a bit and I was very suprised how much room there was in it. I am 6'7 and found it had much more room in it leg room wise than most cars (including my Corrado and my Passat) just the room in the back was a bit worse ;-) We got a 2nd hand one from the stealer with 6k miles on with every possible optional extra on (Sat Nav, heated leather, Air Con, All black cell and pannels, semi auto gear box, storage cover etc etc etc) We kept it for about 18 months altogether before we started our family. Ours was a RHD UK vehicle and we paid £8k for it, which seems quite a lot but we kept it for 18 months, did 15 - 20k miles in it and sold if for £5500, so depreciation is pretty good and if you work out what u save in petrol, tax, parking etc etc. Main things to look out for are: All electrics work as they can be fiddley to fix Turbo is not dying exhaust for signs of cracking depending on what gear box it is fitted with, with the semi-automatic switchable gearbox (cant remember the name SMART used for it) it is normal for the handbrake to stay on for a while after dis-engaging it. The cars actually feel quite fast acceleration wise and although the limiter is a bit annoying, it is nice to be able to sit on the motorway with your foot flat to the floor and know you arent going to get a ban ;-) It is also worth trying to get one with full service history as cause the engine is so small it is worth people who know about it checking it ;-) (and also SMART servicing is pretty cheap anyways)

bristolbaron 10 Posted October 10, 2006 find her a pinkus one! my boss used to be a manager at smart in bristol. apparently the reason the pink cars came about was smart had huge uk stock holdings of cars they couldnt get rid of. they were discounting dramaticly until someone came up with the idea of spraying them all pink! they did it and they sold loads.. the advantage of removable panels! cool cars.. my mum has one, it suits her fine and shes had no trouble with it. only issue would be depreciation.. theyre not the best, but then the cars are cheap to start with. good luck with the search! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIkwdv1kvmo wow! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju6t-yyoU8s crash test

marcus 0 Posted October 17, 2006 Ive been working around these cars for over 6years, they are great, ideal and reliable for what you want them for. As for the worrying about the colour - since when has a bloke not been happy to have a bit of pink!! I'd be more concerned if you got excited about a brown one LOl. All the best with the car mate.
