16" wheels and tyres

hi i have a 94 vr6 rado i have checked the tyre size/calculator thread out

and it worked out the best tyre for a 16" was 225/40/16 anyone running theirs on this rubber?

205/45/16 and prefo 7.5x16 fro best arch fillage, good ride quality, plenty of grip and not too heavy. Plus if you choose the right wheels they will go over 312 discs ;-)

 

and you can still slam your car with no rubbage issues

 

Defo the best compromise looks vs performance over 15s or 17s, IMO

mpst people seem to prefer 16" wheels as apparently the ride is better and there is no tram lining, although I have had no problems at all with my 17"'s and much prefer them over 15's and 16's

Just changed from 17's to 15's and the difference is quite marked. The car feels quicker of the mark and much more sure-footed. They don't look anywhere near as good though!

Wierd. I find my car to be way more sure-footed on 17s compared to 15s. I get far more grip and the car moves around a lot less.

Hmmm. I used to find the car felt quite cumbersome, and it also tramlined on the 17's, whereas on the 15's it feels a lot more nimble. I guess it should have a bit more grip with the 17's.

I'm running 16's with 215/40/16 both front and back (front 7,5 and rear 9 wide)

 

At first I thought I'd need 215/45/16 but after checking with my GPs the speedo is almost spot on (well as near as a Corrado speedo ever gets) anybody confirm if the 215/45/16 give the same results with the speedo ?

I agree mate. More nimble on 15s. More 'cumbersome' on 17s (wouldn't use that word though) but definately shed loads more grip on 17s.

 

Of course all this is VERY suspension dependant as well. We can only really compare if the same suspension is used.

Indeed Mr Doubles, there are far too many variables to say that one wheel/tyre size is definitely better than another.

 

Two common traits of lowered cars are bump steer and tramlining.

 

The wheels are usually blamed for this, which are nearly always 17s.

 

Tramlining is nothing to do with wheel size in diameter as such, but rather offset and width. A 17" wheel the same width as stock would not tramline if the offset remains as stock also. As soon as you push the offset out and fit wider rubber, that's when tramming can start. Even tyre tread can influence tramming, bald tyres especially!!

 

Bump steer is usually the result of the tie rods pointing upwards following excessive lowering, which causes the strut to twist slightly as the suspension compresses and unloads, which in turn affects your toe.

 

And finally, the feeling of lethargy with 17s is down to weight, which I've banged on about for years :lol:

Is it possible that my rather hardcore suspension could be better suited to slightly heavier wheels? Or am I talking sh*t again? :)
