samwire 0 Posted February 7, 2007 ok, hopefully this is in the correct section... i own a 1990 G reg 16v, which has been sat, motionless in my garage for 2.5 years, and i want to get it back on the road...my first question is, is there anything i need to do before turning the engine and secondly are there any mechanics in the north west (blackburn area) that anyone can recommend... thanks sam
ZippyVR6 0 Posted February 7, 2007 Welcome to the forum 2.5 years? flat battery, perished tyres, the oil will have drained completly back into the sump and could do with a change, check the coolant pipes for leaks, any fuel left in th etank will be well past its best. It wil probably fire ok but with much less punch than before. Hope that helps, and best of luck.
Guest Posted February 7, 2007 if it was me i would turn the engine over with a ratchet to make sure its not seized if your lucky it might get a bit of oil to the top end if thats all ok fire her up and straight to a petrol station and a nice drive
JimSTORM 0 Posted February 7, 2007 How long would it take for an engine to become siezed? I left mine for about a month and seemed to have some trouble starting it. Got it going but it went with a bit of a bang..
steve @ 0 Posted February 7, 2007 Fuel will be pish so add some fresh juice. I'd change the oil and filter also be tempted to pull the plugs and drop a little oil in to the cyclinders. And crank it with the ht's off for a min.
samwire 0 Posted February 7, 2007 what are ht's? i should point out what i know wabout cars wouldn't make a very long book..!!

skinnyman9000 0 Posted February 7, 2007 I've recently acquired a car that has been sat outside for 9 yrs, think yourself lucky, lol.
cata 0 Posted February 11, 2007 I think the typical shelf-life for gas is around eight to ten months if I recall so anything longer than that should probably be replaced. I have one question too though. Do you guys think I should change my oil right away bearing in mind that mine has sat for six months and it's synthetic with 4000k on it? I just want to take it for a spin and don't see the point in changing the oil until I put it away again. Cheers
samwire 0 Posted February 13, 2007 ok...new battery, fresh juice...started no problem...brakes hadn't siezed...it goes in monday for an mot and a service...
Phil K 0 Posted February 13, 2007 Thats good news - let us know how it gets on with the MOT 8)
jonnyboyo 0 Posted February 15, 2007 SAMWIRE- theres a VW specialist in DARWEN called Catterals if your struggling. Its near the town centre. I've never used him coz i live in Cardiff now but my mechanic i used when i did live there took his Mk2 Golf Driver (which i sold him) there to have a new heater matrix fitted. Knowing him he wouldn't have used them if they were poo.
samwire 0 Posted February 21, 2007 ok...as well as a few hoses etc...i need a new radiator fan..is there a generic fan for corrados or does it have to be one specific for the 1.8 16v? and if anyone has one could they let me know please...thanks... coolrado 0 Posted February 21, 2007 whats wrong the fan? if its seized you may be able to free it up with some light oil
samwire 0 Posted February 21, 2007 i honestly don't know, but it'd been playing up for some time before, so i guess a replacement is probably for the best, he also can't find my wheel nut thingy...joy!
coolrado 0 Posted February 21, 2007 playing up in what way? if the fan doesnt come on when it should its more likely to be the temperature switch on the rad, try bridging out the connector for the temperature switch and if the fan runs ok you know its the switch. samwire 0 Posted February 21, 2007 tbh, i've no idea, but it started not kicking in, the problem is the car is in the garage and i'm miles away at work, and he still can't find the wheel nut and is trying to force it as i type...
coolrado 0 Posted February 21, 2007 i would check the temp switch first, its alot easier and cheaper to replace than a fan.
samwire 0 Posted March 1, 2007 ok...work done for mot, parts came to £300, labour about the same...i'm quite pleased..my next question is this, the car has an immobiliser and alarm fitted but no paperwork to say what kind they are, i've been onto vw and they were unable to help...is there anyone who can classify them for me...? thanks... Nuggit 0 Posted March 1, 2007 Sam (I'm guessing that's your name!) You can have the alarms re-certified by any good auto-electrician/alarm fitter, if it helps, take a look at the wiring loom. If it's all-black, chances are it's a CAT1, and worth doing, certainly sounds like it is, with it having both. You might also find a part-number/manufacturer name on the underside of the siren, or on the circuitboard inside the fobs.
2_Door_fun 0 Posted March 1, 2007 Take out the plugs. Spray a rack load of WD40 down the bores. Leave for an hr ot 2 then turn engine by hand. get a socket n wrench on the lower pulley and crank away. Change the fuel, oil etc as others have said n Check all the tyres etc. It should fire then leave it to warm up. Drop the oil use some flushing oil. Run that then drain and refill with new oil and new filter. That is def a fun day in my book. have fun.
samwire 0 Posted March 2, 2007 ok...got car back today...yay! but at the mo' its running a bit sluggish, i'm hoping that its just the old fuel working its way through the system, so i've topped it up with fresh stuff and some injector cleaner type stuff...oh, and the central locking is playing up..but apart from that my baby's back...
