best gear ratios for g60 gearbox

Recommended Posts

Well the box arrived today, without the cable bracket :? and the plastic bit a top of the shifter mech broken :(

It's got a bloody massive shift weight on it  Was thinking of swapping the shift mechs over since it lacks the bracket, although i can't see this 3rd hole that i've to plug up? or maybe just buy the right bracket and a new plastic cover?

Also wondered do i have to change over the speed distance sensor on top of the diff housing, it looks completely different?

ive recently fitted mine, it was from a 95 passat into a 1990 16v. I had to use the later cable bracket that mounts with 3 bolt holes instead of 2 as i couldnt get reverse.

So if youve got a ox to go in an early car, you will need a later cable bracket

Bracket and broke plastic bit are fairly cheap. speed sendors are the same although I know what you mean.

VR6 clutch is fine but you have to get the correct one as there are two types with different splines counts. I think IIRC it's the ABV engine code one. Apparently you can also use a diesel clutch but I'm not sure of the details.

Guys, im thinking about going for a different box on mine, ive always hated the original ratio's.

Its fairly obvious that the CTN is a good choice, but earlier in the thread the CTN with 16v CDA fifth was mentioned and not heard much since? To me it looks like a really good option as it brings 4th/5th closer together and drops the crazy 170+mph of the CTN without the 16v fifth to a more realistic/useable 150+mph.

(can't remember exact top speeds, having real problems with the forum at the mo)

Does that sound right?

Mines currently running at 206bhp and 189lb's ft, but im going for red tops/3.5bar fpr/4 branch and system/remap/nitrous.

So would the CTN with CDA 5th be a good bet?

Could someone repost the two graphs of CTN vs CTN with CDA 5th as i can't seem to view them.

Cheers, Neil.

Yes thats right on 15" wheels at 6200rpm a CDA or .0837 ratio set of cogs will put you at a theoretical 158mph as apposed to the 175mph with the CTN 5th. Forum is having some trouble it would appear so pics will be viewable later I should imagine.

Data

Gearbox:- CTN 1.9L D CDA 5th

Tyre:- Michelin all patterns 205/50 x 15

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Top Gear gives 25.524 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 158.250 MPH at 6200 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-

30 MPH = 1175 RPM 40 MPH = 1567 RPM 50 MPH = 1959 RPM 60 MPH = 2351 RPM

Thanks for that mate 8) Just thought, how will my 215/45/16's affect things there?

And those 'cogs' what is included exactly? Is it just fifth gear? I have a feeling other associated 'bits' are needed?

Oh...and the ASD code, did we find the ratio's etc for that?

Appreciate your input into the thread, makes interesting reading.

About 4.15%.

Gearbox:- CTN 1.9L D CDA 5th

No you just need the cogs but if you want the synchro hubs, springs and rings I can sen them also. It's a lot clearer what you have to do when you have the box open if you have bentley it explains the procedure well.

Oh...and the ASD code, did we find the ratio's etc for that?

ASD has a taller 1 and 2 again but 4th is very tall like 145 mph tall so you'd want to swap that out which is a lot more involved and requires hydraulic jacks and big bearing pullers. Ask me how I know this! :D

Here the data for the ASD box on your wheels.

Gearbox:- ASD 1.9L D

Tyre:- 215x45x16

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Top Gear gives 31.015 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 192.293 MPH at 6200 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-

30 MPH = 967 RPM 40 MPH = 1290 RPM 50 MPH = 1612 RPM 60 MPH = 1935 RPM

70 MPH = 2257 RPM 80 MPH = 2579 RPM 90 MPH = 2902 RPM 100 MPH = 3224 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 41.803 MPH

And changes into 2 gear at 3653 RPM dropping 2547 RPM

Top Speed in 2 gear = 70.948 MPH

And changes into 3 gear at 4170 RPM dropping 2030 RPM

Top Speed in 3 gear = 105.491 MPH

And changes into 4 gear at 4346 RPM dropping 1854 RPM

Top Speed in 4 gear = 150.486 MPH

And changes into 5 gear at 4852 RPM dropping 1348 RPM

Top Speed in 5 gear = 192.293 MPH

Anyone have the part numbers for the bracket and the plastic bit?

Also is the massive shift weight needed as my gearbox is missing it?

The CHA looks like wheel spin city good for the track maybe. yep CTN flanges and clutch size is fine. Also I think the CHA is an 020 box so no good for Corrados anyway, have to check that though.

EVERYONE PLEASE NOTE THE CYP BOX IS ALMOST IDENTICAL IN RATIOS AND A GOOD ALTERNATIVE TO THE CTN IF IT"S DIFFICULT TO FIND. Ooops CAPS!

to resurrect this thread after reading all of it!

I want to fit another box as i find my current g60 box hard work.

CTN looks like the answer but my only concern is my torque curve isn't as low down as others here.

Currently 200ish bhp torque unknown as i have not dynoed it yet.

My 3rd and 4th syncros are dying so a change is on the cards, but i am still undecided!

I don't want to make my car slow!

Cheers

I'd try a CDA but you might want to stick your CBA 5th in there as 135 in 5th at 6200rpm isn't much! See the knowledge base for a how to.

Gearbox:- CDA 2L 16V

Tyre:- Goodyear Eagle F1 195/50 x 15

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Top Gear gives 21.873 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 135.611 MPH at 6200 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-

30 MPH = 1372 RPM 40 MPH = 1829 RPM 50 MPH = 2286 RPM 60 MPH = 2743 RPM

70 MPH = 3200 RPM 80 MPH = 3658 RPM 90 MPH = 4115 RPM 100 MPH = 4572 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 34.404 MPH

And changes into 2 gear at 3653 RPM dropping 2547 RPM

Top Speed in 2 gear = 58.390 MPH

And changes into 3 gear at 4170 RPM dropping 2030 RPM

Top Speed in 3 gear = 86.819 MPH

And changes into 4 gear at 4881 RPM dropping 1319 RPM

Top Speed in 4 gear = 110.291 MPH

And changes into 5 gear at 5042 RPM dropping 1158 RPM

Gearbox:- Corrado CBA

Tyre:- Goodyear Eagle F1 195/50 x 15

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Top Gear gives 24.049 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 149.105 MPH at 6200 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-

30 MPH = 1247 RPM 40 MPH = 1663 RPM 50 MPH = 2079 RPM 60 MPH = 2495 RPM

It really isn't that important, it's more important to have a box that drives well, but yeah it does seem like a target just because the CBA won't even get close! :) I'd spend £50 on a dyno run to find out what the engine is doing throughout the rev range. Are you struggling for traction?

not struggling for traction in the dry as such but the 1st and 2nd are too damn low, can't change gear quick enough!

I will get it dynoed and see what the figures are and take it from there.
