No ideas, but I do have a full set up of wiring loom, ECU and metering head sitting in the back of my Mk2 Golf and won't be used for the 2.0l engine conversion.

PM me if you want any of it.

Converting to basic K will be harder than fixing the KE M. It is very rare for the metering head to fail, who has diagnosed it? It is more likely just that someone has altered the position of the 3-mm Co screw.

it has a major air leak from the metering unit if you spray carb cleaner around the top of the metering unit it draws in and the reves go up until its burned off the carb cleaner , ive had the metering unit appart and replaced the cork gasket but it made no difference so i had a local company who specialise in repairing head units look at it and they say its ether gone porus or it has a hairline crack in it , hence the increase in reves . they also said that its not repairable and a recon one is very expensive , but he wouldnt quote a price . ive checked the c/o content and i can get it to run at 0.5 % to 1.0 % fine but when you drive it after a while it will cut out and wont start for a couple of hours , i think its got something to do with the sensor on the right hand side of the metering unit but im not sure what this sensor is for , ive disconnected it and the car seems to run good but im not happy about using it like this as ive broken down in some pritty dodgy spots on country roads

anyone got any more ideas :D

I've seen recon units for over 300 quid :(

part of the problem as crasher says, is that people tend to mess with them to try to compensate for other problems rather than correctly diagnosing dodgy other parts of the system, lambdas etc... I think you're referring to the differential pressure regulator on the side of the unit, basically an ECU controlled warm up/ control pressure controller, similar function to the WUR on a basic K-jet.

Have you checked the large rubber air boot for cracks in the base of the grooves? I have changed two recently on 9A's (one a Passat and one a Corrado). I can't see a cast aluminium housing going porous enough to upset an engine but rubber boots do split. It is often impossible to tell they are split unless you remove them as they crack underneath.

yep ive put on a new boot as i thought that was the original problem , old one was splitting slightly , vw told around £500if they could get one !!! , when the engine is running with the formentioned sensor plugged in then it wont idle and struggles to start but if you put the allen key in to the mixture adjustment pot and tilt it back slightly then the car seems to run ok so the only way to get it to run is with this sensor unplugged but then it still runs rough , what a bugger :)
