Jim

Just been out in a Golf G60 Limited..

Recommended Posts

Went to a largish local meet here in Coventry this evening organised by Decked Dubs guys, and posted on Club GTI too.. was a pretty respectable turnout with all sorts of dubs including Caddys, Polo's, Golf's, Corrado's and so forth.. highlight was a chap fairly local to me who has a Golf G60 Limited turned up. We got talking as i'd PM'd him previously and he offered to take me out for a spin in it..

I tell you something - its a pretty darn cheeky motor! Absolutely lovely car though.. gripped like glue and powered through the revs.. pretty unique sounding engine note as well! A bit of a privilege to have a drive in a proper piece of rare VW history like that :)

Yes Jim, pretty rare and a real street sleeper. Will be worth serious wedge in the future because as you say a real piece of unique VW history.

Lovely cars the Limiteds 8)

I've seen 4 out of the 71 at this stage  one of them was the RHD one that was on ebay as mentioned above. 2 of them are over here in Ireland.

You tempted to buy one Jim? http://vagdrivers.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=8893&st=0

Sorry, I know it should be in the ebay section, but seems appropriate given the topic.

I know when people talk of lottery wins the words Ferrari, Aston etc get mentioned. For me a G60 limited would be on the list..

What number is it?

Was number 32 :) The owner was a really nice chap and happy to chat about the car all evening.

It sounds like its had some tweaks done to it in its life.. he didn't know a huge amount about the G60 but it had some uprated Bahn Brenner charger on it and sounded a bit more grunty than usual... he says documentation in his folder shows it has having been RR'd at 299BHP! I think being 4WD it didn't "feel" that quick but it did quite a lot quicker than a standard Corrado VR.

Number 32 is not the one the guy I work with used to own.

TBH I would if we are talking lottery winnings I would give Karmann silly money for the limited Corrado they have in their basement with 16k on the clock.

Isn't that the really ugly one though?

Nope.

It looks like a totally standard Corrado outside, but nestled under the bonnet is one of the VWM 16vG60 engines. Its a bit of an anomoly.. has a sticker in the boot that says its an alpine white G60.. but its most definately not a G60, and its definately not white.

It lives in their museum basement and doesn't come out very often at all. We were pretty lucky to see it :)

Bit of shame if it doesnt have the G on it anymore. :(

That's the first I've ever heard of it then. Does it have four wheel drive? I've seen pictures of those ones with the sixteen valve engines but the horrid body kits. My corrado has a sticker in the boot that says it's an alpine white G60 but that's cos it is....

Man, what I wouldn't give just for five minutes in the driving seat of that thing!

6 16V G60 Rados were built by Karmann. One was trashed by Karmann on their own test track near Papenburg. One belonged to an ex-CEO of Karmann, Rainer Thieme (ex Recaro CEO), which is the one now residing in Karmann's oprivate car collection basement. This one at Thieme's request had a central armrest fitted to the driver seat.

Think that's Brodie Brittain Motorsport who I believe were based at Silverstone in the 70's & 80's and specialised in VW tuning (Showing my age now Jim Lol)

Very nice motor the G-limited you talk of, the guys ok to. Tagged along with him to ultimate this year. Mate of mine was running a 280bhp mk1 (1.8t audi lump), and he could'nt leave the G-limited on the M69.

Its a real sleeper, for those who are not in the know....... :D

I was at the old mill to in the rado on wednesday (G60), think i spoke to you (red 16v rado?) and the guy who had the white LHD one.

Hi mate - yeah that was me, and Tempest on here owns the white Rado. Will keep my eyes out for you and your Rado and see how it progresses as the months roll by.. it looked like a really nice example already though it has to be said! :)

I was only aware of the two they made by VWM with the funny body kits. Think one was four wheel drive and the other two. I wish a G60 valver had made it to proper production. Guess they went with the VR instead though obviously. Would be nice to have that kind of engine readily available without having to do a conversion.
