Servicing near Cambridge...??

Hey there, I have a green '95 Storm which has 70,000 on the clock.... and has been diagnosed at AmD as needing to have the lower chain tensioner replaced :( Not had any bad experiences with Nathan at AmD, but would prefer to go more local (Cambridge) if any of you guys know of any recommended garages out this way.... Has anybody out there had to have their tensioners done on a VR6...? Or....do Stealth do courtesy cars..??

I don't think Stealth do, but maybe worth asking... They don't mind if you hang about to watch the service tho, top blokes!

Speaking of Cambridge, saw two Corrados in the city this morning.....1 boy racered black one behind me and a purple VR6 coming the opposite way in front of me...... Far too many Cs around here...

 

Erm, Cambridge....no. I take my VWs to Stealth and no he doesn't do courtesy cars. Best thing to do is get a mate to follow you in his car. Stealth is only 90 mins from Cambridge.

Speak to Vince Saiya. What he doesn't know about the VR6 isn't worth knowing but please remember, without actually seeing the car, he can only offer you guidance and not definitive answers.

You need a new *LOWER* tensioner? That's weird, as that one normally out-lasts the upper tensioner by some large margin.

kevvv, welcome... stealth is about 2hrs away! as is JMR but in the other direction.

I have the problem that Cambridge is still 30mins drive, so I have to take a load of time off work, so if I'm gonna be doing that, I might as well go to Stealth.

Yes, its well worth the 300 mile round trip for me to Stealth just for there knowledge of the Corrado... You will find you go there once and just don't want to go anywhere else...

hopefully they can't do much worse than Vindis Sawston (VW dealer) who managed to keep my Corrado in for over 6 weeks while they scratched their heads and clocked up over 700 miles!!! and replaced pretty much everything 'cept the engine!!!!

hmmm, Barr-Tech think that it's not worth taking it all apart because it may not actually cure the problem - so it's drive it around 'til it breaks and then worry about it!

also just to say that Tino at Barr-Tech was most helpful and didn't charge me a penny for attempting to diagnose the fault. :)

 

I'll definately be booking my service with Barr-Tech in a week or two's time

blimey, I took it into Vindis (VW dealer) anyway for an hour's worth of look - and they just rang me up to tell me that it's a dodgy circlip and it's gonna cost £60 all in :) :) :)

 

a real turn-up for the books or will they suddenly "find" that the whole gearbox/clutch needs replacing?!?!?!?!? :roll:

so how did Bar-Tech measure up with your servicing last year Kevvv?

 

looks like it's a toss up between that locally or a day trip to Stealth. Anyone know how cheap Stealth are? They certainly sound knowledgeable but I've never driven so far for a service. Not sure whether to trust a VR to a non-performance specialist maybe i'll get my minor coolant leak fixed locally so i can chance a long drive to Coventry!

Stealth charge £40 +vat an hour, well worth it IMO for there specialist knowledge and experience or troubleshooting these cars, some jobs may take them much less time than elsewhere.
