Water pumps - get metal quality in Herts!

Recommended Posts

Yeah i think VAG are plastic ones, the one that came out of mine was plastic and had a few blades broken off  but i didnt bother with a genuine and just went down to my local car parts place and asked for a water pump and the replacement i got had nice chunky metal blades. I cant remember the make of it now though, i will have to see if i have still got the box somewhere.

When Stealth did my water pump Vince got one from GSF as they always have metal impellers.

The one i got from VW spares also had a metal one, unfortunately it leaked like a bastard!

Mmmm - confusing.

I have been told by two local non VAG garages that water pumps on, say, Golfs, are "changed at every big service due to pumps now with plastic blades being of poorer quality".

VR pumps are less likely to leak tho as they simply plug into the block, the thing you bought was remoulded out of old baked bean cans...

The advantage of plastic blades is that they don't get eroded by cavitation. The OE one I took off had done 160k miles and the blades were in perfect nick, the metal-bladed one from GSF is showing signs of cavitation erosion already and it's only done ~6k.

You're quoting my own water pump guide at me? :o)

The plastic one is the old one, the metal one is the new one.

Shame the quality of the new VW parts has gone for a Burton :-/

So sorry, olly!

I knew I had got this from someone's link. Funny it was yours!

Misread it too. I have read so much on the net over the last couple of days I have :? :? :? myself.

Excellent guide on your link - I had it on paper amongst the other stuff about the cooling system.

I just bought a plastic bladed one from VW, £32.

Gonna wack it on at the weekend to try to sort my fast rising, high water temps as soon as I hit traffic. :?

Would have liked metal, but at that price, I can afford to swap it at 25,000 miles. or every other aux belt.

I'm trying to source a cheaper supply of auxilliary belts too if you are interested...

Thats the problem with internet pornography - you can have too much as Toad will testify...

I've had so many problems with the quality of pattern parts I think I would stick with the VW part tbh, I think the blades can get broken from debris etc maybe so make sure you flush the system well. The other thing about genuine VAG stuff is that it carries a 2 year warranty and if it fails, VW will cover the cost of the part and labour regardless if they fitted it or not.

Toad - the aux belts for the non AC VW (7PK by 1290mm) are £12+vat from VW trade, you'll find a Gates / Continental dealer will be about 7 + vat but the belt may not be the exact right size, +5mm

Yup, a confusing afternoon after a couple of pints has lead to me being banned from all horse shows in Britain :(

Cool. I've got a very good belt/bearing supplier locally so Ithought I'd tap them up and see what they could get.

I just paid £24 for mine :( :(

-Snigger-

Yeah, I'm glad the gruvenparts parts came with them. There are about 5 or 6 in the thermostat housing alone...

Tom - we've got a live one...

I hope he comes to some shows next year. The more deviants, the better....

Supercharged - did not know about 2-year warranty with VW parts.

Clearly, that is worth bearing in mind, too, when buying replacements. 8)
