A company were making these specifically. Can't remember their name now but the car was rebadged as a Magnum or something. Its not a bodge job.. its a proper refit / rebuild and is exceedingly rare! Would love one! :)

It is indeed the Magnum.

 

Some guy who posts on VWVortex actually bought them both when they were for sale recently! But he's in the middle of sorting shipping while they wait in Holland(?)
