CazzaVR 0 Posted December 8, 2007 Gonna have a go at fitting a new one tomorrow- does it go over or under the fuse box? Cheers!
nocrap 0 Posted December 8, 2007 It a real git to do, i think it goes under and to the side i think...so in the end, kind of through it....if that makes sense. if i am wrong you'll soon notice as it'll have a big bend in it, don't worry it wont damage the cable. Have a feel about first and find the hole ( :norty: ) if you prop a torch on the outside you should just about be able to see it. also the fact that it goes through 2 skins with a bit of cloth in between means that it'll probably get stuck! You'll either need a bit of good luck or a lot of patience!
CazzaVR 0 Posted December 8, 2007 Cheers mate- I'll let you know how I get on!
Mike Edwards 0 Posted December 8, 2007 If the outer is okay, I recommend just threading a new inner. Otherwise, I'll look to see where it goes tomorrow.
CazzaVR 0 Posted December 9, 2007 That would be very much appreciated, Mike. The whole thing needs replacing as the clip near the handle is broken, along with the trumpet bits behind the slam panel etc. Got all the replacement parts ready to fit. The actual cable looks very ropey too- really don't want it to snap :? It's been disconnected from the handle ever since I bought the car (hence why I don't know how it's routed). I can get it open because the previous owner rigged up a cable behind the grille.
CazzaVR 0 Posted December 9, 2007 Fitted it this afternoon. Actually easier than I thought- worst part was popping the fuse box and cover back in  Had to adjust cable a couple of times to get it working properly- think it prob still needs to be a little tighter- got a bit bored of it! I just taped the new cable onto the old and pulled the old one through the bulkhead. The old cable was still in place so I could see exactly what went where before swapping the new one in. Cheers for the advice, guys :)
craigowl 0 Posted December 11, 2007 Well done, Cazza. I had to reassemble mine when I had the front of the car off a few weeks ago. What an infernal (but cunning) device the thing is. I found that you certainly have to pull in all the slack in the wire to get the bonnet to jump open smartly when you pull the lever in the car. I think if it is slack and/or kinked on first fitting it could stretch further - just enough to mean that the bonnet will not open at some time in the future. One thing that surprised me was how strong the inner cable seemed to be considering some on the forum reported it as having snapped. :? Did they really mean that? CazzaVR 0 Posted December 11, 2007 Yeh, mine definately needs a little more tightening as it doesn't 'ping' open as it should. Incidentally, the bulkhead grommet is now obsolete. However, a MK5 grommet is a perfect fit and is much more water tight than the original. A good upgrade for a few pence :) .
