Project Plum - The Plan of Attack

Recommended Posts

Also, I'm beginning to think perhaps my issues with the car not being able to pull past 5500rpm is to do with the injectors or a fuel related problem.

Hmm.

Hope it all goes well and you don't get stuck between a rack and a hard place.

lol, cheeky git

rack is dry now, pics up later perhaps. Need to put the arms on now and get it servicable.

Found a Mk2 Golf GTi subframe going free so gonna nab that so that I can start mounting everything on it. Plan is to mount the subframe as a one-piece with everything attached.

So, the rack is done...

Still using mobile phone for pictures, really sorry about that, but what is a student to do?

As it came off the car, still connected to subframe and hubs:

After a serious wire brush and degreasing period:

How it sat around for a few weeks as I cleaned the threads and the inner arms of old steering grease :gag: :

How it is now:

Quick mock-up of it assembled with rubber gaitors, track rods, steering bush and galvanised mount, and top seal (for rubber boot around the U/J):

Things yet to do:

lubricate main rack inner arms with new VAG steering grease,

Find jubilees for the gaitors,

locktite rods onto rack,

attach small white clip to back of the brackety area in the middle

Opinions more than welcome :salute:

Good work, Mr Monkey 8) RAK ATTAK!

You've really been on the rack for such a long time now, good to see it finally finished.

I'm racking my brains for more rackisms...

14 (oops, I've made it 15!) pages and counting... about a crossmember and a steering rack...

Coming soon to The CF for the next 3 months:

Revenge of the Rack: It won't fit

Seriously though, Ron is gonna be real minty! 8)

Oh yeah? and what has your thread consisted of?

1. My wheelnuts sheared

2. A cow grid broke the Octavia

3. Boost Leak! I can fart at higher pressure than the VRS' turbo.

4. COMING SOON - I've got to sell the Corrado.

ya cheeky scamp!

Unfortunately, my car probably will be finished in 5 years time the way I am munching through my student funds

That's a reasonably interesting list you've got there... not to mention pics of Recaros, BBS RX2s, anthracite Speedlines, Bristol Volksfest, Stealth etc etc ;) oh yeh, and the odd pic of a Corrado in one piece

Maybe you could harness the power of your farts! By your reckoning, you could prob run a K04 of them! 225bhp standard... it would literally go like stink!

Seriously though mate, your doing a grand job with it- I would've sold it by now! It'll all be worth it 8) Get a 2.0l bottom end on there and flow the head! Webber Firebreather too + WUR mod

Not totally sure what's involved, but Stealth do it. Maybe worth emailing Vince @ Stealth- he'll tell you what's involved + he's normally pretty quick with his replies :)

cheers pal, do you know what the WUR mod is?

remove WUR,

drill off back of brass cap

turn screw under cap to adjust control pressure of fuel system

this either increases or decreases fuelling across the rev range

a tiny movement of the screw, say 1/4 turn can affect the fuelling a lot so it's best done on a rolling road in conjunction with setting the base timing and idle CO

it can make a valver deliver a fair few more hp at the top end, mine was running fine and spot on on emissions, but vince got nearly another 10bhp peak out of it by setting it up spot on for super unleaded (bearing in mind that was a 2L block with a flowed head too)

ah ok thanks.

Seeing as my KR is only a 1.8 with a standard head and isn't even running so great, I think I will give that a miss.

Cheers though.

Gary,

just leave VW employment, please.

Every time I have left a list of parts with him, it comes back incomplete. God I'm pissed off.

Ooops

Worked out that the bottom half of the red on the petrol gauge is just gunk in the tank, as that is the point at which the car died! Must remember that in future.Managed to get to ASDA, buy a 5L bottle of water, empty it out in the car park, walk to the petrol station next door and fill the whole thing up before wandering back to the car about 200yds away.No-one batted an eyelid, despite there being attendants wandering around the forecourt! Made me think that I really should overhaul the fuel delivery system on Ron and check the tank: most of it must be original and done circa 185,000!

p.s. I am a numpty, but do not flame, I am precious :camp:

What a moron!

Did it myself a few years back ;) Ran out of fuel on a mini roundabout in morning rush hour  Funnier still, my mate turned up with a can of petrol, put it in my car, then went off in his car again and ground to a holt within seconds cos he'd run out of gas too! You couldn't have scripted it better!

Coming over next week then?
