Scirocco driving impressions

Not even bothered how they say it drives like, give me the Golf GTI anyday.

I really like the look of it, but is it just me? or has it a bit of an Alfa look about it? maybe its just the rear lamp shape/boot

anyway its a nice alternative to a golf, maybe not in white, i would imagine a dark blue or red it looks far better, and the interior looks ace too, early Audi TT "Baseball glove" reminicent

they are moaning about boot space, but how many people buy a coupe and think its gonna be a people carrier?

Certainly a glowing review. Still not sure what is 'affordable' about a £20,000 car though :|

Well I for one like it, it's a two door, semi practical, no slouch by the sounds of it and thirteen years younger than any Corrado you will find. I might even buy one at some stage, we need a daily driver since my wife decided she wanted to keep the Corrado over the S3. Everyone seems to slate it because it's not a new Corrado or even a direct replacement, but if you consider VW's experience with the Corrado i.e. complete sales disaster, they could hardly be expected to produce another one could they?

in those shots it looks like a rounded off vauxhall astra....

....especially the rear shot.

Not a coupe

Not a Giugiaro penned design

Not built by hand by Karmann at Onnasbruk

So why call it a Scirocco? IROC would have been more suitable?

Still nice to see the are keeping the our Sport-coupe is a parts-bin Mongrel theme going, suspension by Passat CC, dash by Eos, Engine by who knows what (like the 9a).... So will be dead easy to get bits for further down the line... NOT!

And an affordable Sports Coupe at £20K+ Who are they kidding?

I hate to sound cynical but I give it a 5 year life-span... max. We'll see so many outside branches of Tony and Guy too! :camp: :fondle:

Unless they go the BMW route and turn it into a "wacky 4x4 cross coupe"! :gag: :pukeright:

Why ship something out if you have the capacity to build it in house?

But then was the VR6 not £25K 13 years ago?

Bit like the Corrado then?

Don't get me wrong, I love the Corrado, it's a great classic and I've owned one since 1995, the current one I will never sell. Times and cars change however, you only have to look at evolutions of the Golf to see that. I think it's pretty brave of VW to try their hand again at a coupe(ish) design as they're always niche market no matter which manufacturer builds them, how many adverts do you see selling two door cars (coupe or hatchback) due to impending arrival of new child, need to transport work/sports equipment etc? No wonder they're a parts bin special really is there if you consider in the price of designing and producing a new car that goes on to sell around 95,000 units in seven years?

Well I have to say that I really like the look of it and I'm looking forward to seeing the real thing, rather than just a picture of it.

From the pics I have seen so far I prefer it in red and I just think it has a nice mean look to the front of it.

I can see this being a possible option when my Corrado goes to the big car park in the sky :( which hopefully wont be for a while yet though!

Cheaper and better than a Golf GTI - sounds like a fantastic deal to me.

The Corrado VR6 was always more expensive new than the nearest Golf - but then the Corrado VR6 was hardly a sales success was it.

The Corrado was axed due to many of the parts no longer being viable for production, namely the Golf and Passat bits that belonged to by then obsolete production models.

1995, the final year of production was actually the Corrados most successful year in terms of production.

The new Scirocco probably will only have a production life of 5 years or so but that is only because the market demands (or so the manufacturers say) more frequent model changes.

The Scirocco is probably looking reasonably good value when compared to the Mk5 GTi due to the development costs of most of the oily bits being written off long ago, the fact that its built in a comparatively low labour rate country and the fact that it has to be seen as being cheaper than the TT - the good old Volkswagen Group pecking order

Everyone seems to slate it because it's not a new Corrado or even a direct replacement,

I think a lot of people (not "Everyone"), certainly VW fans, feel short changed because it's bloody ugly (imo), bears absolutely no resemblance to the scirocco or the Corrado, bears only a slight resemblance to the IROC teaser and is once again, over priced next to it's competitors.

It's only natural Rocco / Corrado fans should feel dissapointed because we only have to look at the BMW mini to see BMW made a concerted effort to maintain the original car's identity. Same with the new Rolls Royces.

Even Nissan with it's Z cars share DNA with the originals.

The new TT looks like the old one and so and so forth....

All I see in the "new" scirocco is a Peugeot 306 and Alfa 147 cross breed.

It shouldn't even be called a Scirocco at all.

The Corrado was axed due to many of the parts no longer being viable for production, namely the Golf and Passat bits that belonged to by then obsolete production models.

The Golf VR6 continued on to 1998, but it got OBD2 to get it through the new 1996 emissions laws that the Corrado VR6, Escort Cosworth, Calibra Turbo, Pug 205, Astra 2.0 16V and many others all failed.

The Golf was a good seller, so got the necessary investment, the Corrado wasn't, so didn't and it was canned.
