Advice needed on Corrado VR6 Storm

Hi guys. I'm new on this forum so please excuse my ignorence.

 

I have been a fan of the VR6 Storm for sometime now, my love for it began back in 97 whilst working for a VW dealership in Manchester. At the time I did'nt have the means to buy one, I sort of do now. I'll cut right to the chase, I'm after a VR6 Storm in Green with the cream leather interior. I know only 250 were made hence they are not so easy to come by. My question is how much should I be paying for one of them and are many around with mileage under 100k. All the ones I see are 100k plus. Also are there any common faults I should look out for aswell as rust spots? I have a 100 and 1 questions to ask hence wont bore you guys with them. Just some sound advice would be nice and if possible a specialist's number who I could call to speak to

Thanx for the welcome. There is no reference to the prices I should be paying for Storm's or maybe I'm just a bit blind and have'nt seen it. Any help?

There's a £10k storm for sale at the moment and I seem to remember a couple changing hands for less than £2k in the last year......

 

Prices of VR's seem to be all over the place at present.

I'd be wary about ads that give so little information in general, but includes one of the main plus points about the car is the fact that the spoiler is working! :cuckoo: ...I'd much prefer to know about the condition of the chains, clutch, underbody etc

 

Photos also leave a lot to be desired!.....Some pictures of what's making it "untidy around the edges" would help. So to summarise!....I wouldn't go near it without properly checking it out first (unless bidding stayed at a silly price of under £1200) :tongue:

 

The main thing though, is are you set on getting a Storm model?! You can get a very nice Vr6 these days with a good history and recent work done for £1700-£2000. Some tatty looking Storm models still seem to be advertised at twice that price! (There are a few nice looking Storms for sale at the moment for around 5.5k though)....But at the end of the day you are paying a very big premium for the sake of a few small badges and a colour coded grille!

 

If I were looking for a Storm, I'd save up my money and only pay that sort of premium for a mint low miler. I'd tend to try and stay away from budget priced storms. :|

The guy want's around the £2k mark for a buy it now price. He is the 2nd owner and has history upto 110k. The previous owner was his bosses wife. He said the arches need doing and to make it look quality then the wings maywell need replacing. All the electrics work on the plus side. In a bit of a dilemma here now.

 

In answer to your question, yes it is a storm I'm after. I would love a low mileage one but they are few and far between. The one's that are available are priced at silly money.

Be wary of Corrados with rust, original panels very rarely rust as so much underseal was used in Karmann, so if a panel needs to be replaced through rust you can be fairly sure it's had a bump and has also had a poor repair.

Ask for a full list of major service work done in the last couple of years, and definitely get photos of the rust around the arches! also get a hpi check on it to check for any previous accident history.

Oh, and get pics of the "wear and tear" to the interior.

 

Maybe see if there is someone local to it, who would be willing to give it a quick look over for you. :wink:

Hard to say having not seen it, I would want to have a good look around it before buying it - just going on the advert alone i'd walk away personaly. Finding a Corrado with decent shell/bodywork/interior is the key, mechanical items can be replaced with relative ease, it's bodywork that can be very expensive and difficult to repair.

Agreed.

Ok I havent been a Corrado owner for very long but learnt a few things already and as someone else just said you can get a better specced C for lower price of a Storm if you keep your eyes open.

If i was in your position id go for a better spec standard VR6 for less money. Storms are overrated and your more likely to get a better standard VR.

Thank you for the advice, but please can you elaborate on the "better spec" for me please. What are you refering to? What extras were available that people may have taken up the option on that will make it better than a storm?

 

Sorry for all these questions, maybe obvious to some, but I am new to this scene. I was a previoos Fiesta RS Turbo driver and fab and still am if I could find a Moondust Silver one on a K plate with low mileage. Fat chance of that. Always admired the Corrado, after working for VW, and maybe the time is right now for a change!!!

Sure there's a couple more but those are the main ones. Leather and aircon are the ones I would try and get. Then again, there's so many being broken that eventually all Corrados will end up with a leather interior anyway ;)

Extras such as Recaro seats and increased colour options are what the advantages are but if you want a storm , like i did, then they arent overrated because its what you are after. AC was a dealer fit option on any car..

 

Prices - purely on condition, not mileage id say, loads of history and id say start at 4k for a decent Storm.

Working door handles is a crude attempt at humour!

 

Leather was an option on all VR's except Storms where it was standard. You could also get Recaro leather or Recaro cloth. Standard leather was sometimes heated but all Recaro leather is heated and electronically adjustable. Cloth Recaros aren't heated but are electric.

 

Caveat: the above could just be made up. But it's my understanding so I stand to be corrected! It gets confusing when other VW interiors get chucked in over the years.

All leather seats are heated (fronts only) whether Recaro or standard when fitted frrom the factory..

 

Recaros are electrically adjustable and standard seats are handraulic...
