VR6 Problems

Interesting you should mention Oil based air filters, but I've only had some MAF-like rough running probs since I fitted a K&N panel filter to my VR a couple of weeks ago - but mine's got the later type hot film MAF and later M2.91 ECU with integrated immobiliser... :? :? Disconnecting it & re-connecting the MAF with the engine idling produces the only slightest shudder :?

 

 

i was also told by someone very well informed that its only when ppl with the K&N panel filter go OTT with re-oiling it and not letting the oil soak in long enough that can cause the MAF problems.............

 

and mine is exactly the same when i disconnect the MAF and reconnect it......just the slightest of judder then back to normal :? ..........though i dont appear to have had any rough runnign issues :?

Hmmm.....curious.

 

Take the car for a drive with the MAF disconnected and it should drive horribly. If there is no change in the way it drives, then the MAF is definitely fecked.

You do realise once you've ran the engine you should net discoonect the battery for 20 seconds because the wire in the MAF is burning off comtaminents.

The hot wire type MAF's burn off time is only one second -- I defy anyone to turn off the engine and then disconnect the battery within one second :-) ... :p

 

Not sure how the hot-film ones behave though ???

mine is still running lumpy, I took it into VW to run on VAG-Com, this was at 7:30 in the morning, I left the car with them, and wandered off for a smoke and coffe in town, rang them up after an hour, "no sir, we're not finished", eventually came back after an hour and a half.

 

VW - "Well sir, had a bit of trouble starting your car"

 

Me- "you know it has an imobilizer right?"

 

VW - "oh, uh, um, yes?"

 

Me- "the red key on the keyring, you push it into the housing, then the green light comes on"

 

VW - "oh, uh, yeah, I think we tried that"

 

 

Me - "can you run the test now then?"

 

VW - "Sorry sir, we're too busing now you've missed your alotted time"

 

Me "'%7£*@!!!!!!!!"

 

I tried disconnecting the MAF and it died straight away, so now I have to try VW again

Liverpool to Oxford might cost me a bit though in Petrol.... ;-) :lol:

just spoke to VW Motorworld Oxford, to book it in for another test (after giving up on Aylesbury) and he said

 

being a K reg it might take us a few hours to sort the test out, because you can't just plug them in and run a test like you can on the more modern models. There's alot of manual testing to be done ontop of the computer tests, the car won't give us a specific fault code like a more modern one would

 

Is this true?

 

its not what i've heard from people on here, or from the VAG-Com site?

 

I do plan on buying the software, but the turn around on ordering and receiving the product scared me off, as I need this sorted ASAP, and I heard it can take ages to get the cable and software.

There is a UK Vag Com site but you may want to get it straight from Ross Tech (they are the suppliers to the UK place)

 

May also be cheaper with the favourable exchange rate we have at the moment.

AFAIK all VR6s are OBD1 and as such will work with VAG-COM etc. I think the guy at Motorworld might be getting confused with G60s that only work on VAG-1551, which requires manual translation of the codes.

 

If you've got the large connector under your gear gaiter and not the twin plug, you can get instant code read-outs.

I have the twin connectors :(

 

VAG-Com sell the cable to connect to this, so I assumed that everything would be peachy

Ah....it should still work with the adapter cable though. I can't keep up with all the changes the Corrado received!

I got my Vag-com delivered today, the only fault code it found was:

00553 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)

29-10 - Short to Ground - Intermittent

 

So at least I know the MAF is dead......

 

If anyone in the Surrey area wants a read-out on Vag-com sometime give me a shout. I don't think its 100% conclusive at detecting dead MAF's (according to other posts on here).

Guess I was just lucky :o

I had the same fault code with the engine running and got 30-10 open or short to b+ intermittent with the ignition on and an 02 sensor fault code which went away (must have been running rich because of the dead maf). Have just got a new exchange maf from a Bosch dealer for £150. (Costs £330+ vat from the stealers).

corradovr6sc - Can you tell me which Bosch dealer you got it from? I've been getting quotes and the cheapest I've found is £213 from a mate of a mate who works for a Bosch dealer.

 

I'll also try resetting the fault code and see how long it takes for the fault to come back.

Yeah I thought that too with mine, especially as 'short to ground' came up but I checked the wiring and it was fine. The new MAF has not thrown that code, or any code actually, so it was definitely the MAF. With the hot wire type MAFs, water likes to get under the connector, so check for corrosion on the plugs and try and seal off the connection somehow.

Corvr6 - I haven't actually fitted the maf yet but will do it at the weekend and will report back if it's still misfiring.

 

dan r 901- I got the maf from Bowers (a Bosch dealer in Stoke-on Trent). They intially quoted me £213 then but when the maf arrived they wanted £150+vat (£175) in exchange for my old maf.

That *should* be the price across the whole Bosch authorised network, as it's Bosch of Germany's price, not the franchise's.

£213 must have been the price of a new unit although this unit is brand new so I don't know why there's a difference in price.

 

I don't get it either. I was quoted the £150 exch or £200 new, but the only difference is the exch unit apparently uses s/hand plastic housings, but as I've found, and yourself by the sounds of it, the exch ones are brand new anyway......so there's no point getting the new ones!

I think this is a classic example of VW thinking If everybody returns the old parts there is a smaller used parts market.
