Money tree wanted!

Put my VR into the local VW specialist for a couple of little jobs and a full service this morning and I have just had a phone call off them give me a list of problems that was so long I thought I was listening to a story tape! £300 has just rocketed to £800 in a matter of 2 hours, and it could still rise. I think a C is bad choice for a daily drive!

 

Sorry to vent on here but it was either that or I throw myself out of the window (it is raining outside so I don't fancy that).

Yeah, they are the only people I trust around here (thanks for the recommendation by the way). They were good as gold on the phone, I guess it is their equivalent of a neighbour telling you they have run over your cat. I told them to keep it in as long as necessary and make sure everything is spot on. I don't think I am going to see much change from a £1k if they have found all those problems in just 2 hours.

Cheers mate, I had a 205 GTi before this and I thought that was expensive with it's constant faults and problems but that just pales in comparison.

your not alone mate! my C's off at a local vw specialist getting a few things done which i cant do on my drive... i'm dreading the call with the final costs today! :sad: Corrado's as dailys are expensive, but fun, if you have any luck with that money tree can i have a seedling? :lol: cheers!

well i got another email from the garage today, took the car in last week and found the rear carriers were past it (thanks boostmonkey for the new ones!) and i was sent the wrong arb's (the company i bought these from were v v helpful considdering they'd been sitting in my garage for 4 months, got the manufacturer to send new ones out right away!) we thought it'd be a case of finishing the job off and me settling up the bill tonight....

Quick update:

 

Bolts needed for rear beam, arrived Tuesday.

 

Powerflex rear Beam bushes incorrect, Powerflex has only ever had one other VR6 Corrado that shares same size beam bush as Golf 3!! Typical, they are now amending their listing and have sent some bushes to arrive today at very short notice.

This is exactly why I only ever take my car to a garage for MOT or things that are100% impossible for me to do without expensive equipment.

 

Teaching yourself basic maintenance and even some other jobs that garages charge a lot for really do help keep costs down.

 

I wouldn't be able to have a C if I didn't have the skills I've taught myself, really does speak volumes when you're running on a tight budget :salute:

Nice to see they are doing a good job keeping you informed and actually asking for your knowledge with regards to the brakes rather than just botching them! Labour is definitely the killer but if they do a good job it softens the blow......very slightly!

I do agree with you but it is a time issue when you use the car as a daily drive as well. I have't got room in my garage so I have to work on the drive and sod doing that in this weather. Plus a work away quite a bit so that makes it even more difficult. Maybe I could start bringing my C to you instead of the VW specialist! :)

true, and i have done the majority of bits and bobs to my car myself but if your workign a 50hr week and the weekends are busy, theres not the time needed to pull a car to bits and change everything! :( but i like the idea of the boost monkey garage for unwell corrado's :wink:

 

Have to say they are spot on for calling me and emailing with questions rather than going in gung ho, its an audi tuning specialist and the service manager (justin) was a mk2 golf nut so he's very good at looking after the corrado as he always liked them... thing is theres not alot you can do, if nuts snap and parts foul things have to be replaced and made to fit, luckily they have the ability and skills to do it!

Would be fun to have my own garage sometime, if I don't end up in some other branch of engineering.

Wow, 50 hours is killer :shock: I take it your rear carriers turned up ok then? :salute: Yeah, those are good points. I never really think about taking mine to a garage cos I can never afford it, never have been able to either :shrug: Sometimes it is nice just to be able to send your car off when it's unwell and have it returned nice and fixed :clap:

Must admit I've been fairly lucky in that mine isn't a daily and, like the Boost-based-chimp himself, I'm happy to get under the car unless it needs specific tools to do. Plus quite a few guys on here have helped me out in the past. :D

The help from everyone on this forum is great, you start sorting out one problem that would have cost a couple of hundered in a garage and find out it costs you an evening and £25 worth of parts. Anything you get stuck on just search it in this forum and someone has writen an article on it or if not just pop the question and someone will know the answer.

Between the mk2 Golf haynes and the Bentley Corrado manual, I reckon absolutely everything on the car is covered :salute:

 

1.8 16v engine isn't covered by Bentley, so I use the haynes for that and for other UK-biased parts of the car.

Tools are the killer at first but once you have them thats it.

What sort of tools? Specialist VW ones? I have got a good spanner set, socket set and other odds and sods.

Depends what you wanna do buddy. You can obviously spend thousands on tools and still only have a part-complete set.

Yeah I see what you mean. For the time being I will stick to jobs that only require basic tools and then build my tool collection as I build my knowledge.
