AB 0 Posted March 5, 2009 hi my car did not start again this morning. the story... monday morning the car did not start it just turned over and over. i fitted a new coil pack and it started first time so thought i was on a winner. used it for a day fault less. it then stood for 2 days and started on the button last night, carried out my journey parked up went out this morning and again just turns over but did not fire. the other day i did check to see if there was fuel and there was (shown by the fact it started) any ideas welcome could it be a cam sensor or something??? thanks need to sort this asap as work is getting pee'd off with me calling in. fla 9 Posted March 5, 2009 Did you change the ecu relay 109? Also, see if there is a spark. If fuel is comeing through and you have a spark it SHOULD start. Can you borrow a crank sensor from someone to rule that out?
AB 0 Posted March 5, 2009 will check the relay thanks (would it turn over tho if the relay was shot??) where would the crank sensor be located please? thanks
fla 9 Posted March 5, 2009 crank sensor as you look from teh front of the car is a black cover on teh front of the block towards the bottom of teh engine. If you look from teh top of the engine, look down beind the rad and you'll see a largiish white connector - this feeds to teh crank sensor. If you drive on to some small blocks you can slide under the car and you'll see it. Middle of the engine block (widthwise)
AB 0 Posted March 5, 2009 cheers pal got a spare so will try that.
Roger Blassberg 0 Posted March 5, 2009 I would hazard a guess that this is our old friend, the ignition switch. Very much cheaper than a crank position sensor, just a complete bar-steward to change. Book a course of treatment with a chiropractor before starting the job...... Get a genuine VAG one, the imitation ones are often total rubbish. Not likely to be the cam position sensor as it will start and run wthout that. Best wishes RB
AB 0 Posted March 5, 2009 ok thanks. just curious would it still turn over if it was the ignition swith???? thanks for all the help guys :notworthy:
Toad 0 Posted March 5, 2009 ok thanks. just curious would it still turn over if it was the ignition swith???? thanks for all the help guys :notworthy: Yup, it makes contact on the starter, but loses contact on the ignition position. Try wiggling the key when you turn it over...

frankie 0 Posted March 6, 2009 this may sound abit silly but mine was doing a very similar thing. turn out be the fuse for the spoiler!
Reggit 0 Posted March 6, 2009 this may sound abit silly but mine was doing a very similar thing. turn out be the fuse for the spoiler! Nah, not silly. Two unrelated and non essential items shere that fuse - the spoiler and err the fuel pump (oh yeah, that one's essential!)
Adz The Rat 0 Posted March 9, 2009 Mine is doing a similar thing, it cuts out and refuses to start again for ages. Replaced the 109 relay last week and its done it again today. Just had it checked on diagnostics and its saying a fault with the 109 relay again! Its really annoying me now, what can be causing this relay to shut the engine off? It was a genuine VW relay I fitted too
fla 9 Posted March 9, 2009 test the relay by applyig 12v to it directly and hold the power on. This should close the circuit and the relay should not chatter at all. If it does its faulty. Also, clean te spade connectors before refitting - spray tehm with wd40 and fit and remove the relay a few times.
AB 0 Posted March 12, 2009 i had a horrible week last week from not starting. in the end i changed several things and now seems sweet. 1. coil pack (dont think this needed doing due to number 2.) 2. changed ignition swith 3. changed fuel pump relay 4.changed fuel pump fuse. i did not do all these in one go i done one at a time car ran fine after each one then stopped again causing me to try the next item. been fine for a few days and drove faultless to ultimate dubs (400 mile round trip)
