BMW Z4 Coupe M / Nissan 350Z ?

Recommended Posts

What sort of track car would you like then Wendy, fast, fun, or cheap to run?

Well obviously fast and fun - but unlikely will be able to afford it. Will have to see what funds are left after purchase of road car.

Can't see that i would have more than 6k, probably nearer 4k and then have to get another lodger so i can actually race or do the Track Days.

Anyone looking for a house share ?

My house is nice - seriously, all just renovated and decorated and most imprtantly off road parking. !!

IMHO, the Z4 is a shockingly ugly car, I'm not sure I care how it drives when it looks so ugly.

The 350Z while not being beaten as badly with the ugly stick, is about 250KG's too portly.

I think you should dig deep and get a 996, or a Cayman, or a Boxster, or an Honda S2000.

All just my opinions.

Wendy... I'd be happy to help build you a Mk2 VR6 to race. I'll have several of the required parts soon...

I think it would be a shame to strip out and potentially damage your corrado, as it is a lovely example. But if you wanted to track it, it wouldn't take much to do, and the mods would be fairly reversible...

Big front brakes, new wheels with track day tyres, some bracing, ARBs, suspension upgrades, remove your interior and store in the loft. The car itself is well maintained so it shouldn't need much more than that really... And when you want to upgrade, refit all the standard components and interior and flog it...

i'd really like to share a track car with one or more people if anyone was interested :)

Hmmm. I'd be up for that, but would only want to play with one or two others. Think that would be awkward enough anyway... Drop me a PM if you're interested...

Sounds like a fecking good idea tbh, shame im so far down here otherwise i'd be WELL up for that! Skinnymans silver valver looks to be a good base, especially as its a non sunroof model!

..or were you thinking of doing it to a Calibra or something?

Mk2. Nice and cheap to reshell. Light, so it won't need big expensive brakes. Or huge power. Probably go for 16v or VR6 in it.

Got plenty of bits lying around. Just need an engine and box really....

Haha, a shared MkII track car between 2 or possibly 3 would be brilliant.

You'd need to work out who looks after it, who works on it, who pays for parts and who gets to use it when though.

No reason why you can't all take it to a track day and alternate sessions though. It's good fun going with someone else driving the same car as you can compare notes/braking points/techniques and there's a bit more of a "team" type spirit to it.

Anything here to whet your appetite? http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/list.asp?s=29

Walesy - those pictures always pop into my head whenever I think Exige/Elise now  I do desperately want a white Exige...

And yeah Wendy - if you think reversing a Z4 is bad, try an Exige - it has no rear window

I have decided that my Toronto living plan will be to be carless for the first year. I shall rent as/when/if I need a car and use public transport/heel-toe express for the first year.

That should then gives me enough time to work out where I'm going to be and what I really want as well as time to save cash.

If I can afford an Exige and trundle it over to track days by then, I'll be uber happy. An Exige is a border-line daily driver in the UK, but there's no question it'd have to hibernate in Toronto -29 and bare metalwork in the car is definitely not conducive to a fun driving experience. Not to mention the big chunks of ice in the road.

that was definitely the approach i was thinking of - normally an extra driver at the track days isn't that much more or you just alternate on individual sessions on the PAYG days. not as much fun going to one on your own so good to have a bit of a group involved!

Well if you fancy a fast track car then I can thoroughly recommend something like this: http://www.pistonheads.com/SALES/1040970.htm

Think I have just fallen in Love :luvlove:

At work the moment, had to quickly scrawl though the replies, some good ideas there guys.

Will answer more fully later at home.

Track Car sharing though - my biggest thought of this - is blame - someone at some point is likely to damage it through being too over zealous - then what happens re cost sharing. Otherwise - of course an excellent idea.

More later

Accident damage should be straightforward, i.e. "you bend it, you pay for it".

The running/maintenance costs can be pooled budget. There are lots of people who can give you an idea what sort of money should be set aside for a MkII track car, including Andy Balm who (I think still) has a trackday Golf. I know of a MkII that was caged & made track ready for under £500... including the purchase cost! The conflicts are more likely over who has to store the car, who/how will fix when stuff breaks, and arguments over new modifications.

But to be honest about it if you're going to build a really fun trackday car you want a car with RWD. An E30 BMW would be as cheap to buy, prepare, repair & run but it would ultimately be more satisfying than a Golf to drive on track.

Oh, well of course - esp. the 996 or Cayman - but sadly in the real world - its not going to happen. :(

The Track Day Car share idea - surely taking continous sessions - with differing drivers - is somewhat overworking the car - isn't it ? Most sessions are 20 minutes unless its not an open pit lane. I guess this is better than a continous 2 hour drive ?

What about several people having their own Track Cars and going to Track Days together  - actually might just as well set up our own race series - I know me - I would race you all . I have been told - I am just little competitive !! PM sent to you Tom & John.

Anyway guys, lets stay on the main topic that was started here - the new Road Car.

I am starting to think more Porsche - thanks to you lot.

Someone has said about depreciation being less - well that has got to be quite a large consideration in this.

A concern I do have with Porsche - despite the running costs - is, how easy would it be to sell ?

There are hundreds and hundreds of them ??????? !!!!!!!!!!

Views ?

Well if you want an E30 to track, there's a whole race series for doing it as cheaply as possible - http://www.pbmwc.co.uk/about/ ;)

Edit: Oh and yeah Porkers are a bit common really aren't they?

Well frankly a Boxster S makes tons of sense in every sense doesn't it. They're fairly cheap now, handle as well if not better than any other Porker and they're decently quick, but of course I also understand that Boxsters might be a little persona non-grata with you now that Glenn has one aren't they? haha.

Seriously Boxster prices have bottomed out I think. Of course the running costs are still full-Porsche money. I recall Glenn saying that rear tyres for his Box-S are £400 each if you put P-Zeros on it... £400 each!!!

As some rightly comment, I really do want a 911.

Z4, I did not get out of it buzzing, leg tremble or anything, but I think some of this was related to I could not get comfortable, the seats are huge, and I was sliding from side to side, so basically the car and I were not as one - if you know what I mean. :(

I found for sale a Z4 Coupe, 3litre with M seats, M steering and Suspension (apparently the car is much better with these )- so I guess I need to try that.

Benn looking on the Internet and I can't afford the M Sport they are still silly money.

Run flat tyres cost £750 for 4 - so I was told. Frankly they sound S...T , as sad as the Corrado spare.

Is is me, or have 2nd hand car prices gone up ?

Surely this is people being a tad too optmistic - current state of the country and all that. Ok, so the government is offering the 2k scrappage, but surely this should barely effect 2nd hand cars over 10K ?!

Z4 soft top - no comparison to the coupe M sport. Personally I think the Z4 coupe is a beautiful car, but unfortunately has the inherant issues of the rag-top. I've driven the 3.0 Z4 and its shocking in more ways than one; firstly the 3L engine doesnt seem to pull until you rev it hard. Secondly and more importantly the drive is removed, you cant feel the drive so well; its based on electronic steering - for which I find is very notchy. However I hear the true M (not the silly M-pack with sporty seats and lower suspension) has good old normal power steering and thus more involved. Thirdly the ride is poor for the road - prepare to be blitzed by a 350z and a TT; but on track it holds its own.

The run flats - again poor for the road but better for the track; they're just more rigid - thus too rigid for the road. People have tried normal tyres and find better handling on the road; however, BMW and your insurance may walk away.

Reversing - easy. Open the window and you can lean out and almost touch the rear bumper. The misty bit of glass back window is poor, but you know roughly the boot finishes not much far after that. Its a short car.

350z, decent car, but so many different years and engines. Bit big for my liking, its heavy. I'd rather a Boxter, regardless of looks. Obviously the middle porsche, Cayman?, is the best of boxter/911 worlds and highly regarded for being quick. Can you afford to trash one on the track?

Yes, second hand car prices seem to be going up (I've seen TT's go up by 1.5k - not funny); could be two reasons - weather, and more importantly, have you looked at new car prices? For instance the 2 seater Lexus has gone up from 55k to 62k - but thats not as much as the pound has lost in the exchange - therefore they're actually discounting the car; much like BMW and Mercedes are doing now. Try buying the same car in Germany and prepare for a bank smashing shock!!!

Wouldn't be surprised if there were Porsche special recommended tyres (as there is for the Z4) with thier own suffix number. I know someone with the boxter-s who insured his tyres because of the cost of them. More money than sense in my mind.

if you want little depreciation/ease of resale Porsche wise then you need to go for the air-cooled ones, the 986/987 Boxsters or 996/997 911's are sold in far greater numbers year per year than the air-cooled models,be it 3.2 Carrera,964 or 993,as these are the ones being sought after, although the water-cooled stuff are more suited for day-to-day driving, its all dependant on your budget and your preferences tbh,I have owned my 993 Carrera 4 for coming up to 4 years/13k miles and would like to think I have only lost around £4/5k in that time

not at all

considering its a proper Sportscar as opposed to a hatchback based Sports Coupe the Corrado is,the running costs have been relatively easy, especially as it was a £60k car when new in 1995, anyway ive had it serviced 3 times since I bought it in October 2005,due to limited use over the past 2 years tho I have always put it in for a major rather than interim service, although the interval time wise hasn't been strictly adhered too,its oil has never looked to have needed changed earlier and there hasn't been any noticable difference running wise

Jan 2006-£591 major service 60k OPC

Jan 2006-engine wiring loom recall FOC OPC

Feb 2006-£40 MOT local garage

July 2006-£93 fan/drive belts OPC

Feb 2007-£40 MOT local garage

Aug 2007-£1300 major service,new clutch,transmission fluid,brake fluid,plugs(12-twin spark distributor),front discs/pads,front splitter painted,rear bumper support brackets replaced- Porsche specialist

Oct 2007-£125 window guide rail replaced due to corrosion OPC

Dec 2007-£831 new alternator and belts-warranty company contributed £535 to bill

Jan 2008-£540 Pirelli p-zero 18 inch tyres supplied/fitted-local tyre place

Jan 2008-£150 Steering geometry OPC

Feb 2008-£60 Battery Halfords

Feb 2008-£380 MOT,new rear discs and pads supplied and fitted-local garage

Jul 2008-£250 old alarm removed and replaced with new one local auto electrician

Feb 2009-£634 major service,MOT,distributor drive belt changed, cam cover gasket, headlight lenses replaced Porsche specialist

May 2009-£420 M033 Porsche suspension kit(springs and shocks) supply only OPC

in all close to £5k spent in close on 4 years/13k miles, although this sounds a high cost to run,the consensus of opinion when running a 993 is to budget approx £2k p/a,and of course Ive attended to the clutch which is an engine out job due to it being the Carrera 4,and both the front and rear brakes have been changed, the next thing on my list is the suspension which should cost me just under £1.5k if I replace the front wishbones too as well as including the M033 suspension kit Ive just recently bought

mpg round town is just under 18mpg

insurance is approx £630 p/a and is under an Admiral multicar policy, with my mate as a named driver too
