VR6 Early V Late

I was wondering how many people on here have the early model VR6.

Probably 1992 K or L plate ?

How do you find them as the dash and interior is slightly different.

As far as I can see the dash has different switches heater controls and vents.

Does this make it more reliable over the later ones,do the same problems crop up with the heater controls and the headlight switches ?

Also the door cards are different with electric window switches on the card rather than the door pockets.

I dont think the seats are much different only cloth patterns ?

Would an early VR6 be more of a classic in years to come compared to a run of the mill late VR6?

Will they ever be collectable ? Apart from Storms

Is it worh buying an early VR6 with low mileage or a cheap leggy late model project ?

The car would not be a daily driver just a weekend toy to replace my ZX6R :)

Decisions decisions any input would be valued :)

Hi,

I think the main issue you might consider with going for an "early dash" VR6 is that most of the internal trim bits for that dash & door cards are now no longer available from VW stock. (Not that certain items of late trim are now unavailable too!). I have a 94/L car which has the facelift dash/door cards but the earlier "rocker" type sunroof switch which I have to say I prefer to the late "bubble" sunroof switch. It's all down to personal taste but I prefer the later interiors, especially if you can get a leather interior.

 

I think the days where Storms were more collectable are now passing by. There are so few Corrados in circulation these days that all good quality cars are now sought after, almost regardless of the model. If a Storm floats your boat then go for it, but personally I'd look out more for just a well looked after car.

I've got an early K-reg VR and the interior is all late - I think it depends on what they had laying about at Karmann as I've heard of cars with 'bitsas' of early and late interior trim.

 

More relevant is that very early VRs like mine have distributor ignitions rather than later coilpack. Distributors and coilpacks are known to fail on both variants but later coilpack cars are thought by some to run better. However, the age of all Corrado's now means the variables involved in how the cars run are so huge that I'd personally rather have a well maintained and smooth running dizzy car over a tatty coilpack one. There was vastly more coipacks made - obviously. There is no premium for very early cars like there is with Storms.

 

I'd got for a decent example with a well documented history and tons of receipts- regardless of age and mileage

Different colour leather. Apart form that nothing at all. They're not any faster!

i wanted the latest/newest registered i could get when buying, even though i didn't know about all the differences.

 

I think most people who don't eat, drink and live corrado will see a storm or late vr6 as the one to get. But as said by Neil, so many other factors will influence what you buy, unless your an avid collector prepared to travel the country

mystic blue being a Storm only colour,whereas Classic Green was available on the rest of the range,so its possible to even make a bottom of the range 8v in Classic green with the Beige Leather option into a Storm look-a-like

 

just add

colour coded grille(easy DIY)

Sony CD player

BBS Solitude alloys(v rare in 4 stud admittedly)

2xStorm badges and you have a look-alike :roll:

 

 

I prefer the later interior as it just looks more modern and classier whereas the early interior looks more 80's

is there any advantage to converting from an early dash to a later version?

Probably slightly more modern as Roddy says.

I can see the benefits doing the door cards as I think the electric window switches are better placed on the door speaker pockets :)

In the years to come I can see late model VR6s becoming more desirable than earlys, obviously only if the individual car is in good condition with a good service history. Like for like condition/milage wise it's always the later models off of the production line/last model revisions that become more sought after unless the earlier model has better performance - S1/S2 Escort RS Turbos spring to mind. That said a sub 70K, well kept, early VR6 would be well worth buying.

If you take the Mk2 Golf GTi as an example the type most people lust after is a 90 spec 16v with big bumpers and they will allways sell better than the equivalent others, although a pre-90 spec small bumpered 8v is still a good car. In the Corrados' case I think it will be late model, dark metallic VRs with black leather that become most sought after (and I don't say that just because I have one!) if you take the Campaign & Mystic Blue Storm out of the equation.

Aren't the true early VR's a miniscule percentage of all VR's?

 

Yeah I think so. There doesnt seem to be very many. They are the ones with the weirdly stitched cloth seat. (looks like rope style material)

Think I will try for as late a project VR6 as possible :lol:
