Deffo sounds like the pump... wouldnt drive it if I were you. Pump is easy enough to change, maybe £40 new and you will need a new sump gasket. Shouldnt take a garage more than an hour to change, so not pricey. If you feel confident doing it, go for it.

10 odd bolts on the sump (Obviously drop the oil first). Two bolts holding the pump in place, pull it down, put the new pump in place. New gasket on the sump, fit the sump back, new oil & filter and away you go. Not a bad idea to replace the pump even if it is just the switch, not worth giving it a miss just incase it is weak.

PS: Ensure if you do go ahead you fill the oil pump with oil before fitting it. You may want to consider putting grease in the two cogs to ensure it gets up oil pressure nice and quick when you start it. If dry it will take forever to get pressure up and could cause damage.

Also, you'll need to buy the sump baffle that is attached to the oil pump pickup 'cos it WILL break if you try and remove it from the original pump... It's about £12 from VAG and is soooooo worth doing... I got a genuine pump from VAG and I think it was just under £90 + the baffle... :?

I don't know about SLCs but my VR6 hasn't got a sump baffle. It wasn't there when I dropped the sump at Stealth and no sign on one being there in the past. Maybe 6 litres of oil is enough to not need one? I've never had the oil buzzer come on during hard cornering but thinking about it.....bores 1 and 6 go first on the VR, so I'm thinking....oil surge, bores 1 and 6 would be the first to get hit with a pressure lost on left and right handers.....have I sussed the infamous "1 & 6" mystery?

This is of course assuming the VR lubes the bores by crank throw and not piston crown jets like on the valver?

Also....what chunky diesel type pumps would fit on the G60 or VR or do they already have hefty pumps? I've always felt pressure at idle is too low on the VR and 16V...and here's a little story for you (yawn!)....VW planned to fit an oil pressure guage as standard to the MK2 16V but the pressure was embarrassingly low so they didn't bother!

Ooops, I hadn't realised that you were all on about VRs/SLCs... The baffle I mentioned is for a G60 engine...

The G60 (PG) also has the jets to cool the piston crowns, and the standard oil pump is supposed to be hefty enough for all road use applications, which is why I fitted a new VAG one, not an upgraded one... 8)

Cool, I suspeced VW would be wise enough to fit a decent pump to the G60, I'm also assuming the VR's must be man enough too as it has 12 lifters to fill and pressurise the upper chain tensioner. I just thought CrazyMarcel's nice new VDO guage looked a little low on the old pressure!

Don't worry about not reading the top thread. I assumed we were talking G60 too!

As some of u may know i am only 16. im not planning on fixing this my self, and im not very sure what to do when i do take it somewhere. Im guessing i take it to a garage and then just tell them whats happening? im afraid they may not have the knowledge that most of u guys on the forum have and wont be able to help me. im sorry in advance if this seems annoying. but please leave comments or anything help full. thanks TJ

they would start off buy testing the pressure then changing the switch then pumps etc nodoubt-just tell them wat uv told us.iv put too new switches in mine inside a yr,so dont be surprised if thats all it is.but as aposegil and zerok66 said its def worth while getting the pumps changed!!

iv got the 16v so not the best person to follow.should imagine vr is much the same.
