Old Man's route to a Corrado

Recommended Posts

I've left 40 behind and can't see 50 yet so here's my tale of cars- brace yourself- you might not have heard of them.........

Morris Marina pickup- 45 yes 45 bhp

VW Caddy pickup, petrol (almost best fun ever had)

Astra Mk1 GTE red (just magic- there never has been a better seat than a Recaro)

Astra Mk1 GTE black

205 GTi white (giant killer- could hold out against anything on a B road)

205 GTi miami blue ditto

405 MI16 Ming blue (what an engine!)

306 S16 diablo (engine rubbish compared to 405)

Golf Mk3 TDi110 (marriage caused a decline)

406 1.8 (further decline)

MB Vito van 110CDi (total collapse of values)

A3 1.8T recovery at last- great engine

306 S16 blue (you know how they say you should never go back.....)

Golf Mk4 TDi130 silver torque torque torque- and theres' more cornering ability on a banana skin

Volvo S60 D5 sport- you can laugh, but the standard sound of that engine is just tremendous

Audi TT 225 good, but not as good as it should be...

BMW X3 (for the school run- its a jungle out there!) Astravan 19CDti 200PS (mine- faster than all the above- complete nutjob)

and now  Corrado VR6 Storm

Haha, loved the above comments. I'm at that stage at the moment with a severe lack of funds resulting in no change of car for several years (luckily I like the car though). Welcome back... which flavour of Storm (colour)?

Welcome! If you could share which clinic pack you got that would help me a lot ;)

Nice car history, I'm sure the corrado won't disappoint. The noise alone is addictive :luvlove:

I've clipped off a sample from the back of a door card to let them identify, so I'll let you know once it comes- and the noise is just about the only reason I bought it :luvlove:

congrat's on the car - a wise choice sir!!

funny you mention removing the coilovers - I'm 'approching' 40 :) and I foolishly bought coilovers last May - and now want them off the car - ride quality is just too harsh - and it definatly IS an age thing

I'm around the same age as you so i also want a nice ride (ie not harsh) - i fitted some Koni T/As and Nothelle springs and the ride is as comfortable as standard with improved handling capabilities. I'd say invest in some decent springs (with uprated shocks) and you wont be disappointed. Dukest has lowered his car and the ride is also very nice - perhaps pm him to ask about what his setup is.

I'm approaching 30 :( and this is how i ended up with my Corrado...

Land Rover 2A 1969 - First car, had it 7years and still trying to find it to buy back.

Volvo 360GLT - at 17 the RWD thing was so much fun and 114bhp seemed to be amazing!

Volvo 360GLT

Honda Civic CRX

Mercedes 190

Mini Italian Job

Porsche 944 S2 - As good as the Corrado but costs 3x more to maintain and no V6 roar

Reliant Scimitar SE6a - a crcking old school car, would have another if i had the cash n space.

Vauxhall Cavalier TD

VW Corrado 1.8

VW Corrado G60

VW Golf Mk1 1.6 Diesel

VW Golf MK1 Gti 16v

VW Scirocco 1.8

VW Golf Mk2 16v

VW Golf Mk2 16v

VW Golf Mk2 VR6 - Awful handling, never again!

VW Golf Mk3 Gti

VW Golf MK3 VR6

VW Golf Mk3 VR6

VW Polo 1.4 16v (6N)

VW Polo 1.6 8v (6N)

Citroen Xantia Activa - if you find one cheap, buy it for the fun - no body roll and amazing at jumping hump back bridges!

Vw Polo Tdi (6N2)

VW Golf Mk2 16v

VW Corrado VR6

Won't be changing it for a while yet :)

Maybe we should start a forum with discounts for old farts buying OEM springs? :shaking: Heh Heh Heh. Interested in comments on springs though- needless to say it looks good with coilovers, so ideally I'd like to be lowered a little from the sky high standard, but still not too firm. I'll PM dukest for advice on what he has- thanks

And Jamie- thats a worrying fetish for VW you've got there, with a sprinkling of Land Rover- not bad head count for a handfull of years though :salute:

I see you have had a taste for the Pugs! I had a 205 XS for my first car, not nearly as nice as the GTi but it was a good car, always wanted to do an MI16 conversion.

Would be good to see some pictures of the Storm. Let me know if you want to sell the coilovers to help fund some standard shocks, or you can have my shocks in exchange :)

Sorry- already swapped for standards with donjon- doing swapover early next week.

My sister had an XS same time as my GTi's and I often drove it- funny thing was that it was sometimes better to drive on a twisty B road than the 1.9, up to a point. The slightly softer and longer travel spring/damper setup made it much more fluid until near the limit where it just didn't have the poise of the 1.9.

................which brings me back nicely to my first point on coilovers  If driving at less than at the limit, more travel can be better. And at my advanced years, I dont tend to drive at the limit anymore . Well, that's the official line anyway.............

Mix the chassis of this...

205 GTi [strike:27byii4t]white[/strike:27byii4t] Anthracite grey

with the engine of that...

405 MI16 Ming blue (what an engine!)

and you have the best car I ever owned. God, I still miss it :luvlove:

Yep, the old all-alloy MI-16 was some motor- it just wanted to hit the redline every time- loved it. :notworthy: Then they flippin' well wasted it, gave it a cast iron block, variable intake manifold ...like the VSR... and it just sucked. More low down torque, but no joy at the top- disaster. Made the S16 and the 405 le mans a terrible disappointment.

The 205 chassis was brilliant. At high speed though, the 405 was far more stable- though the bodykit had a hand in this. But the prize for best chassis had to go to the 309- along with the ugliest..UGLIEST..I say ugliest.. hatchback ever :gag:

Ah well.. they don't make em like that anymore :pale:

I know. I've tried to wean myself off VW, but I'm too much of a 'it must do everything well even if nothing excellent' rather than other makes that do certain things well but rot away, or chews bushes, bearings brakes and electrics...lol. Loved my old Scimitar, my first V6 and it got me hooked :)

Impressive route, a lot of 80's hatches there. Have been in a driven most, 205 was probably the purist but sod having even the smallest of bumps in them. There is a reason they are quick...

Im VW biased on mine as you can see:
