skid 1 Posted February 11, 2011 Well i can officially say i have bought another Dub to join the collection i have Bought myself another Corrado, but a VR6 to go with the 50K G60 i already have and my MK1 GTI. Its a bit of a project car so looks like i will have heaps of work and time to put into it. Basically its a 95"N" plate wich has been sitting at a local garage for the past 3 years with a knackered head gasket. I was kind of keen on getting myself a detailing project for a while, and when i was chatting to the garage owner he asked if i knew of anybody that would be keen on a project, wether it was to fix or even break for spares, i had a look over it while it was stashed away at the back of the garage yard. Ok it may look a bit of a shed to start with, with moss all over the car, some water ingress to the cabin as one of the mats is soaking wet. With the interior of the cabin being damp the leather seats and various other internal furnishings have a small mould skin on them. The body work is straight as a die but as the car is red(yes another red car to the collection  ) and sitting outside for soooo long the paint work has faded, i just hope the oxidisation is not too bad and i can compound it back enough to get it back to its true colour. Couple of minor scrapes on the bumpers, wheels look true and no Kerbing on them but really need a refurbish. But the car has a Full VW history, Air con, s/s exhaust (looks like a milltek) K&N panel filter, upgraded shocks and springs,Looks solid underneath. Obvoiusly i imagine the brakes will be seized up, prob need new discs(not pitted or scoured but rust scale on them) but i will try and get them cleaned up and see if i can save them  Just waiting to get the car home so i can start working on it and turn it back to how it should look Pics will be posted up once i get it home. Time to get my detailing products stocked up!
Yandards 0 Posted February 11, 2011 After seeing both your MK 1 and the G60 I can't wait to see this one.

skid 1 Posted February 12, 2011 Cheers guys, i dont imagine i will get it in the same state as my G60....but i will have a good try. Here is hoping there isnt too many mechanicals seized up with it sitting for so long. Cant actually wait to get it home and get started on it.
skid 1 Posted March 5, 2011 As i said there was a fair bit of mould on the leather :scared: Project VR6 arrived home today  So before i get started on mechanical works on the car i gave it a quick wash down........well it needed it after not getting washed for the past 4 years :scared: Also gave me a chance to have a closer look at how the paintwork is and how much a job i have to do. Let the laughter begin  img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/mrskid/Project%20VR6/P1010823.jpg[/img] After a good wash, well a couple of washes to be true. Lots of G101 and P21S, it started to look a bit cleaner  No wonder with this much water sitting inside the footwell :scared:  Managed to Vax off the surface water for just now till i get the whole carpet removed and washed/dried. The roof lining will come down at the same time for a good cleaning too.
Big'G' 0 Posted March 5, 2011 LMAO, can't wait to follow this one closely, you've taken on a project and a half with that one Skid. . . .
Jim 2 Posted March 5, 2011 Dont think I've ever seen a red VR on Solitudes before. Works really well though! Looks like you've got plenty to keep you busy there but will be following the thread with interest :) Well done for saving another.. looks like it was close to going a bit far over to save! Wompa 0 Posted March 6, 2011 DAMN Thats one ugly interior!!! Did the car stand under water?
emu 0 Posted March 6, 2011 Lot to do but when you finish you will be happy, worm days are coming up so the water will dry up :)
skid 1 Posted March 6, 2011 The car sat outside a local garage for the past 4 years so that and the sunroof seal hanging off and prob the gutters blocked thats where the water ingress came from. Being stuck in the sun without any proper wax/sealant to give it some UV protection no wonder it faded to pink so much. I do detailing in my spare time and with the proper products and knowledge base i will hopefully get this back to its former glory. I just hope the paint is not too oxidised and the paint is thick enough for me to cut it back to rid the oxidisation. Once i get the interior stripped, roof lining out and it all cleaned with the right products and process it will dry fully in the sun, the natural UV light will assist in killing the mould spores. :)
Yandards 0 Posted March 6, 2011 Not another red one :) I would go for a heater scuttle seal replacement as well as the sunroof issue - be a shame to get it all dried out and get another puddle in the footwell.
skid 1 Posted March 6, 2011 Oh dont worry, once the interior is out it will be getting the talcum powder treatment and a thorough testing ;)
Pat_McCrotch 0 Posted March 6, 2011 I'm loving waiting to see what this will become :)
n3p 3 Posted March 6, 2011 Will keep an eye on this thread, also agree with Jim - solitudes on a red C works well!
skid 1 Posted March 7, 2011 Not another red one :) I would go for a heater scuttle seal replacement as well as the sunroof issue - be a shame to get it all dried out and get another puddle in the footwell. Had a quick visual of it today, looks like somebody has already tackled it with a sealant gun, so maybe its not coming from there. Mind you looks like he slapped it on with a shovel....lol. I will strip it out and do the job right ;)
hyland770 0 Posted March 8, 2011 this is going to be epic! (nice parking btw in the first pics) lol
k6kny 1 Posted March 9, 2011 Looks good once you gave it a clean, the faded panels have improved massively. Really like the Rado in red so looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
skid 1 Posted March 10, 2011 Well i took the wheels off yesterday and now down to the powder coaters to get refurbished, maybe a bit Cart before the Horse as there are other mechanicals wanting looked at but might as well get them done when its not running. Took the front Discs off for inspection and plenty of thickness still there so down at the machine shop getting a very light skimming to remove surface rust. Couldnt get the rear caliper carriers off as the 2 bolts are seized in so once i get an oxy/acet plant to get some heat into them i will get the rear discs removed and cleaned up too. Will get the head removed this weekend and get it away to get skimmed before i get the head gasket replaced.
Diesel Junior 0 Posted March 20, 2011 This is going to be a thread worth watching, great pictures mate, keep em coming - and well done on saving a car others would have given up on!
skid 1 Posted March 20, 2011 This weekend managed to get the cylinder head off and to my surprise no seized or broken bolts/fixings, totaly chuffed to bits. Head going down to a local Head shop to get checked and skimmed ready for refitting. Think i will change the water pump while i am in about the area, just not sure wether to search for an aftermarket metal impellor pump or get a standard vw plastic internals pump......time to do some search on here and find out whats best. Got my wheels back from the powder coaters and surprisingly they came up remarkably well(pics will be posted when i get them all clean and sealed). Got my front discs back from getting skimmed and so much better without the rust scale on them. Also i am def sure the most of the water has been coming in through the heater scuttle, cause while i was searching for the Alarm module there was planty of water around the base of the fan unit. The Alarm (meta M99T2)and imobiliser(M36T2) will need looked at as i am sure its "locked out" as i am not getting any of the main power light coming up on the dash, the sunroof, the windows and indicators are not working. All the fuses have been checked so i need to investigate further, also an alarm specialist is coming to check over the alarm system.
Diesel Junior 0 Posted March 20, 2011 Good point on the water pump, VW changed mine while i was in hospital so got no say in it and was unable to check forum either! They put an OE plastic one in which replaced an identical one that had lasted 16 years.....
Danny B 0 Posted March 20, 2011 Looks like an interesting thread......really like Red C's and looks different on Solitudes (as some have already mentioned). Like the swimming pools as well :)
skid 1 Posted May 12, 2011 Well its been a while since i have posted any updates on this project VR.....prob cause not much has been happening with it. I was hoping to get the head back on the car this weekend once i return from offshore but found out from the head shop doing the skimming that the Exhaust Valve guides are all worn! Dont know how common a problem this is with a 115k engine esp since it overheated. Worst thing is i bought the car as a non runner so i dont know if they were showing any other symptoms for this before hand. But i can get the head skimmed, valve guides replaced, seals replaced and valves grind/cut for £300. Hopefully this will be done asap so i can get it on and running. I have ordered new rear discs, bearings, abs rings, pads for the car so thats another job to get on with once home. Tried a couple of areas on the bodywork with the rotary and a mild compound and it cut back the oxidisation on the paint and all the swirl marks brilliantly so now i cant wait to get the whole car machine polished and gleaming to its proper colour. My G60 is due its MOT so hopefully that should sail through as i am lucky if its done 1k since the last MOT. Hopefully have something to write and show on this project once i get home. skid 1 Posted February 21, 2012 Finally, after nearly a year since i purchased this project i can finally say that its now Moted. :win: Since i got the car and got the head rebuilt and then running(Big thanks to Bobby for all his help), rebuilding all the brakes. Getting the wheels redone, sorting out some of the lights i stuck it in for its Mot last sep. Unfortunately it failed on 2 things :( Nearside wing side repeater bulb not working(Doh! ....my fault did even notice). And a very small rust spot on the drivers inner sill(just under the door), which the tester managed to find after much beating with his Ice pick hammer...lol. I could have welded this up myself, but as this is a visible area on the car it would have to painted, so i got my mate to take it into his bodyshop to repair and paint this for me. While it was there I was hoping he could have sorted out some other bits around the car like some small scrapes/scratches on the bumpers etc, but unfortunately he did get round to them. Well 5 months later i got the car back from him.Sill repair done, and sprayed the whole of the sill area, which has sorted out some of the stone chips on it. So it sailed through its MOT today, advisory on 1 rear shock which was leaking. This i knew about and i will replace the shockers at some point but left it as was only bad enough to be an advisory. Now its road legal i can finely get started on this proper. I have various seals to replace, get the Aircon checked out/serviced Get the key locks sorted as i have only 1 key which fits only 1 door lock so whether i re-tumble the locks or replace them all i am unsure yet. Stripping out the whole interior and cleaning it proper or start on the outside detail i will have to weigh up what the weather will be like. But at least its on the road now
