good to know... what is the standard price these days £55 ish ? I'm always wary of these deals. they normally want work and will fail it on a silly thing knowing they can get some business.... do they offer a free retest in the price ???

I always use a reliable small garage in our village pay top whack for the MOT but it never fails. I know he doesn't have any interest in my car apart from making sure it's safe to drive on the road.....

On a similar note i think you can take your car to halfords auto centre and use tesco clubcard points for a MOT.

£10 in points = £30 to spend at halfords auto centre according to the tesco website.

This is the same for me. I'd rather pay £55 to someone I trust do check my car is safe. I'll happily get anything fixed that isn't safe but I HATE the idea that places like (but not limited to) kwik-fit will tell you that you need X amount of work done and even then you can't be sure that the car was correctly checked for safety anyway. I don't know if this kind of thing really happens, but for £20 extra I get piece of mind.

Most VW dealers do an MOT for £30!

And fail the rear bearings on 'excessive play'. Then fit a new bearing with no preload and the wheel mere miles away from falling off. Chunts.

Well i can say when i went to halfords (it only opened in december) that there was me and an MOT tester from a certain kwik fit garage and everything he tested was failed on discs and pads, exhausts or dodgy tyres. He has since been told where the door is! Now im the only tester! It really depends where you go but i will NEVER EVER fail a car on something it does not need! It really annoys me that just because i work for somewhere like halfords that im automatically a robbing gyppo!! I spent 5 years in a main dealer (toyota/skoda dealer where i was trained) and they are the real thiefs!

I wont use places like kwik fit for mot's for reasons above, me and a mate took his car to a kwik fit once for the 'FREE' winter check up, got the car back with a list longer than your arm of things that supposidly were dangerous ie all four shocks leaking ( nope they just poured brake fluid over them to make it appear they were leaking) discs and pads all round ( nope nothing wrong with them ewither) the list just went on and on and the quotation for the work they gave him was over £1200 pmsl.. Wouldn't even trust them to fit a tyre for me these days even if I was desperate..

I take my car for an mot at a garage that purely does mot's, no chance of failing it to get more business, yeah you pay a little bit more but you save in the long run, plus if it does fail you still get 2 weeks to sort it out yourself and get a free retest

Again follow the above.. my stepdad took his car to kwikfit for a sunday mot which only failed on items they could replace.

my friends a mechanic, so did the list of jobs - half of which didn't need doing. He also found failures which did need doing that they didn't pick up.They did retest for free, but it was a lesson learnt.

My MOT tester does MOT's only. They're pretty tight, but I'd much rather that than be driving a dangerous car.

My car was insured by Kwik-fit last year and you got a free MOT test and oil service with it, can't say I had any trouble with them. The car passed without any advisories and not long after when I had it in for service at a specialist garage they confirmed there was nothing wrong with it.

Actually that's not all strictly true, they did wrongly fail it on the reverse bulb being out because the tester hadn't engaged reverse gear properly. In their defense though, the gearbox doesn't always engage reverse gear properly, I know when it happens but someone who's not driven it wouldn't know.

I think they do vary wildly across the country though, some branches are probably best avoided whilst others are perfectly fine. I was ripped off from the Exeter branch years ago but haven't had any trouble from the Preston one.
