Dazza Storm 10 Posted August 5, 2011 I'm intrested if anyone out there knows what the original manufacture of tyres were fitted to the last of the Storm edition cars were? I believe they were Dunlop Sp2000's?? But not 100% sure of this. Could anyone clarify this for me? I wonder if you can still get them aswell? Mine are currently wearing Dunlop Sport Sp01's rear and Dunlop Sp9000 upfront! If anyone has the Storm brouchur or magazine feature or other promo prints maybe you can make it out in the picture? Thanks
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted August 5, 2011 Pirelli P6000 were also a popular tyre at the time. There's no way of telling what tyres it came on when new as it varied according to market. And besides which, why would you want a 15 year old tyre design anyway? Personally I would fit the best I could afford of the current tyre models due to the huge improvements in grip! Dazza Storm 10 Posted August 5, 2011 Thanks, I was wondering out of intrest as I am thinking of trying to go complete OEM of how it rolled out the dealers when new?! £££'s permitting of course lol. Or the tyres that were fitted for the press pictures! I've had Pirelli P6000's on another car in the past and I really rate them as they are a good hard wearing tyre! RW1 0 Posted August 5, 2011 (edited) Had Firestone F690's on mine. Some had Dunlops SP2000 or something like SP2***. They were very quick wearing. Brochures are re-touched photos so not always the car. It shows Uniroyal. Old tyres are fairly easy to pick up. I have just fitted brand new 20year old Michelin MXV2 tyres to a Mk2 Scirocco to replace the original MXV2s from new, for good reason ;) . leeeeshad 0 Posted August 5, 2011 I have just fitted brand new 20year old Michelin MXV2 tyres to a Mk2 Scirocco to replace the original MXV2s from new, for good reason ;) . Do you mean they are 20 years old? or just that the design is 20 but they are new tyres?
Dazza Storm 10 Posted August 5, 2011 Funny my unused space saver is a continental?! Also aren't tyres only given an 8yr expiry lifespan because of the natural deterioation of rubber??
Jon_vr6 1 Posted August 5, 2011 Don't use P6000's awful tyre yeah they last ages but any sign of a damp road and they understeer badly. Had them on mine and you could do a 4 wheel drift in the rain
RW1 0 Posted August 5, 2011 Do you mean they are 20 years old? or just that the design is 20 but they are new tyres? 20 years old. Brand new with colour running lines still marked. Have 6 altogether, 2 for puncture/damage replacements. Bought th elast one 3 weeks ago in North Wales. .
Supercharged 2 Posted August 5, 2011 Still surprises me that tyre age isn't even an MOT advisory!
RW1 0 Posted August 5, 2011 Only got advisory on the originals at 18 years when the walls started to crack. Still had 4mm of tread depth on them at 22,000 miles. By that time I had 3 MXV2s ready to go on, just needed a 4th. So they got replaced when I got the 4th over winter and the replacements have had two MoTs without comment. Sourced from Ford Escort boot spare wheel & tyre so not been exposed to UV. They get inspect too often like they've just been done today for the 40 mile round trip to Tatton on Sunday. Tread is fine, walls fine, driving like MXV2 always did. No extra heat on the way to BVF in July. Can't say other brands are the same. The Corrado's Avons are giving out after 12 years and the rears are still like new with 6mm tread depth still available. So they will be replaced. Thats the problem with Sunday cars, replacement isn't wear and tear, its aging of the parts or lack of use of them such as seals which then start weeping. . KIPVW 0 Posted August 6, 2011 Still surprises me that tyre age isn't even an MOT advisory! Agree mate i know i'm in the same boat as Chris when it comes to tyres ie they dont wear out due to the much lower miles we do, but i definately change them every 5 years due to age as i know i like to get a little enthusastic shall we say driving sometimes so i like to know the tyre isnt gonna give way. £300 ish for 5 years use! It's a no brainer. Chris i'll talk to you Sunday and give your hands a slap! :)
RW1 0 Posted August 6, 2011 Chris i'll talk to you Sunday and give your hands a slap!Oooooo...... :norty: as i know i like to get a little enthusastic shall we say driving sometimes Exactly! That what niether car experiences with me. Remember, I'm a pensioner these days and I have to follow the pensioner's highway code.... have to create hold ups everywhere by driving at 15mph below the road speed limits. :D . davidwort 0 Posted August 6, 2011 ...but i definately change them every 5 years due to age...:)Don't agree with that, 20 years may be pushing it a bit, but changing tyres just because they are 5 years old is a bit excessive, besides, yours spend most of their time out of sunlight in the garage :)
RW1 0 Posted August 6, 2011 BTW I won't be the only one on the concours line at Tatton tomorrow with its grandad tyres on. And it will have travelled a fair old way to get to the show. .

KIPVW 0 Posted August 6, 2011 yours spend most of their time out of sunlight in the garage :) lol! sure they do :) I know what you mean David but to me a set of tyres every 5 or 6 years aint too extravagant! :)
